If the Big 12 survives, things might get creative.
Louisville and Cincinnati for 12, adding Houston and Memphis for 14.

That's exactly what I thought.

No one will vote to expand until after WVU, KS, OU, and TX explore what their options are. Why would they? Whether they decide to leave or not, it's just good business to leave your door open to all possibilities and see what others are willing to offer.

UCF and USF should be 1 and 2

I’d put other Eastern scholls like ECU, Cincinnati, and Memphis up there too to pair with WVU and UCF/USF

I’d honestly have NM, CSU, and BYU ahead of Houston as well.

No other P5 school will move to Big12, knowing at some point Texas and one other school will move to Pac14. That should trigger Oklahoma and Oklahoma St leave, too.

Why would Louisville ever leave the ACC?

I can see the Big 12 surviving, but I don’t see Louisville leaving the ACC. I can definitely see Cincinnati and BYU. UCF/USF is a possibility if the Big XII (12) decides to go to 14, IMO.

The BiG XII wants nothing to do with any AAC school or they would have already grabbed one or two. The elites don't want to associate with "City" university. It is what it is. IMHO, the BiG XII should take the 100 year view of conference realignment and take Colorado State and New Mexico with certain funding deadlines to meet. Don't give them a full share until they prove up. CSU would need a new basketball arena and New Mexico a new football stadium etc. Put it on the alumni to fund the move and upgrades. Long term, they are the best cultural and academic fit.

RE: Rank the AAC schools the BIG XII would want
To me the most obvious adds for the Big 12 are clear, not in any particular order but expanding to 14 teams (puts them on par with other eastern power conferences).

To get WVU off an island Cincinnati is a must, household name, very competitive during short Big East tenure, former "Power conference" school as member of Big East, not mention investing heavily in athletics and excellent basketball in addition to usually strong football.

UCF AND USF. No brainer... huge markets, recruiting, travel partners that are already HUGE rivals (did you see the War on I-4 TV ratings this yr??), two top ten universities in enrollment. Also gets West Virginia back connected for their Florida recruiting ties.

Lastly to help bridge the now 4 eastern teams you would want a bridge team somewhere in the middle. Memphis fits this spot PERFECTLY!! No pro sports, Power Conference sized stadium that keeps getting upgraded. Historically good basketball and now football continues playing at a high level across multiple coaches. Traditional rival with Cincy from Metro/C-USA/AAC, also on the verge of a rivalry with UCF (UCF at Memphis next yr should be telling). The perfect bridge from east to west.

All interesting conjecture in this thread but I like your reasoning on this. If the Big 12 ever decides to expand, the opportunity to add schools in the Eastern time zone will be appealing to TV as well as gaining major population states such as Florida, Ohio and a fast growing Tennessee.

It's so logical that one has to wonder how the B12 expansion circus last fall came up empty. That continues to raise doubts about the long term stability of the current configuration.

I think it will be 2023 or 2024 as too what happens for the B12. If Texas and OU stays, probably go after 2-4 AAC or MWC schools. That keeps the P5 alive.

I should also add that USF and Cincinnati were former "Power conference" schools after 8 yrs in the Big East. USF made it up to #2 one yr and Cincinnati nearly made the BCS National Championship Game. So when looking at it that way only Memphis and UCF are being "promoted" to power conference status. USF and Cincy are akin to Louisville, Pittsburgh Syracuse, Rutgers, etc. leaving the Big East/AAC for another Power conference. Louisville is an especially good comparison as they left C-USA for the Big East at the exact same time as Cincinnati and USF.

Louisville and Cincinnati for 12, adding Houston and Memphis for 14.
From the perspective of congruence and footprint logic, that needed to have happened a few years back.
I doubt the B12 has a master plan for anything beyond the status quo, the only aspect they can reach agreement.

Cincinnati, Memphis, USF, UCF and Houston will be part of the "New" Big 12, after certain schools flee for greener pastures.

Until then they are stuck in the AAC.

Probably whoever the TV people want. I imagine when the contracts come up for renewal, UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, and UConn will be the favorites.

If the Big 12 didn’t have West Virginia, I think going west would be best. A combo of New Mexico/CSU/BYU would be good. Not the best, but would be stable.

Agree with the premise of going west, but you picked 2 schools that traditionally suck in football especially UNM. SDSU, BYU and Boise would bring much more to the table. Add Fresno as a 4th so they all would have travel partners. IMHO the Big 12 is adding no one until someone leaves though.

You evaluate schools on what they bring if 2-10 not if 10-2. Remember Presidents are the ones who vote, and things like academic standing and prestige matter more than W-L on the football field. The thinking goes, sports ups and downs come and go, but you are stuck associated with the institution for 100 years. Ask yourself do you want your brand associated with Memphis?

Colorado State is part of the west, growing almost twice as rapidly as the south, and already more populous than several southern states (will pass Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Louisiana over the next 15-20 years, as well as Indiana and Minnesota). In terms of research dollars there are 3 G5 under consideration who are above KU and ISU: USF, Cincy, and Colorado State. UConn is not far off, behind KU and ISU but ahead of OU.

These are important considerations. Add schools like Rice and Tulane with top admissions, and even BYU and you have almost the entire finalist list. UCF and Houston are much lower but still in the consideration band, as they are at least ahead of oSu.

Admission standards and research level were definitely a "cut factor"

Research:
A = USF, Cincy, CSU, UConn, Rice, Tulane
B = UCF, Houston (not quite making the cut were Temple and New Mexico who are ahead of UCF and Houston)
Admission Standards:
A = Rice, Tulane
B = BYU, UConn (SMU would go here, but cut for overlapping TCU in DFW metro)
the rest get a "C" on admission standards (Memphis and ECU would get "D" ratings)

Everyone else was cut. The next thing you look at is athletics, and more about the funding and ability to grow. Who is hot now is often a factor of coaches, and the good ones get hired away (e.g., Herman, Frost), so you do not rank that as high. The only "Brand" in the bunch is BYU - but they have issues off the field (Baylor situation didn't help them). You could argue UConn Basketball is a brand, but it's football.

That is the list, and that is where it sits. Those are the factor which weigh most heavily on Presidents when they make 100 year decisions. It's a different list than fans have.

Why would Louisville ever leave the ACC?

Well if Notre Dame wanted to join the ACC, ESPN might ask them to move.
