Yes, "dude." He picked Candle when he put him on his staff. Do you honestly think he didn't recommend Candle for the position, even as much as he would have wanted him on his own staff?

Just as Pinkel wanted Amstutz at Mizzou, Campbell wanted Candle at Iowa State. I'm fairly certain that Campbell was not selling O'Brien on Candle for the Toledo job; he was too busy putting together his coaching staff for Iowa State. His belief was that Candle would be in Ames as Offensive Coordinator. That was Campbell's guy. I still think Candle is more comfortable in the OC role and that he's learning to be a head coach.

No question that Campbell wanted Candle as his OC at Iowa St, but I think you are wrong to think that Campbell didn't want his buddy to get a shot as the HC at Toledo.

Not saying Campbell did not want Candle to get the Toledo job. If Candle was not going to Ames, Campbell ABSOLUTELY wanted Candle to get the UT job.

Kind of a chicken and egg thing here. As with Mizzou, Pinkel wanted Amstutz as DC. Then he was offered Toledo job - and he took it and Pinkel was ok with that. When Beckman went to Illinois, he wanted Campbell to come with him, but Toledo acted quickly and offered the job to Campbell. We all know Candle went to Iowa State with Campbell and there was some hesitation and probably some looking around quickly before offering the job to Candle. Only then was Campbell ok with him not going to Iowa State with him. They all would have preferred the assistants came with them, but none of them were upset when they got the HC gig, more money and didn't have to move.

Taking a new job (or losing a job) and moving a long distance are two of the top 5 stressors in an adult's life Those 2 often go together - and when it doesn't work out, divorce follows - another of the top 5 stressors. The others are death of a loved one and severe illness/injury. I only know that because I got married (which is also a top stressor), and was offered and accepted a new job in Chicago within a month. I was so stressed out, I couldn't sleep. Making those moves are not easy, and money isn't always the answer to what people want. Sometimes the timing is just not right. You have to just to with your gut. As for me, I changed my mind and turned the job down in Chicago and the stress went away immediately. I never regretted the decision and ended up moving about 10 years later for more money and a job I really wanted.

The fact that Candle has said he is still learning to be a head coach is a very good sign. It means he has his head on right and he wants to be successful when he makes that move. If he is good, the offers will always be available. He is still young and a lot to prove. Other than at QB, we have more talent returning next year than we did this year - considering that Cody Thompson was out for the essentially the entire MAC schedule.

I hear you in regard to stressors...late 2015 I took a new job, lost my father... got separated the beginning of 2016 and divorced a year ago today.. then back to my old job in 2017...finally starting to feel like me again....crazy the toll that will take on you.

Put on barely a show then "pick" the guy you want. Having someone come in blind with that talent already in-house and recruited? Doesn't make tons of sense.

Oh, so sorry. Silly me. I thought that you meant that Matt picked Jason as his replacement. I was somewhat close to the situation when all that came down and that definitely didn't happen. MOB ran that show. But yes Dude, Matt DID pick Jason as his assistant. Great point!
