GCU vs. St. Johns
Any thoughts on how well we might do against St. John's this coming Tuesday?

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
I’m worried. Our shooting has been awful the last two games. 4 for 38 last night!?! Painful to watch. Defense was pretty good but if we played St. John’s last night, we’d have been crushed. Shooting must improve. And Blumbergs needs to do more of the driving he showed once last night. Don’t settle for threes.

Also... any idea why Braun sat so much last night? The mayor usually plays 35 minutes or so... wonder if it was purely performance or if he had a medical issue of some sort.

I listened to Majerle's pre-game and post game reports and he mentioned in the pre-game that he did not intend to play Braun or Benson much. In the post game he basically said Braun was not playing well so he pulled him. Thus I do not think it was due to a medical issue.

I disagree with the notion that we would have been crushed by St. John's had we played them last night. We stayed disciplined with the help defense, there were flashes of them showing that they could actually play in against a zone unlike the last three years I've been watching them in person. Coach needs to put more emphasis on driving against the zone and collapsing it or hitting the backdoor cutter when the zone steps up. I know that Coach wants them to be more aggressive and that was clear in the second half when he was yelling at Fifii to get to the hole and drive against the zone. At this point it is about them implementing the game plan, which they showed for a little bit that they can. I get that we are 3 point oriented, but we need to be able to adapt for different teams that we play. The biggest thing that bothered me is when we tried to screen against the zone, it doesn't work at all.

You still have home court advantage but if you can't beat San Diego at home I don't think you will beat St. Johns. I say GCU will hang tough but end up losing by 10-15 points. So what's up with Braun? Our guy Loften also battling some nagging injuries but it seems like other guys have picked up the slack big time. AJ Harris is showing Aggie fans why he was an ESPN Top 100 guard lately and Jermerio Jones is scoring and rebounding. Hope Braun is going to be ok. Don't want any excuses when we beat you guys! J/K. Good luck vs. St. Johns.

Anyone know if we sold our allotment of tickets? I’d imagine we’d buy all of ours and then any that the other schools didn’t buy. I really wanted to come to this game, leaving after work and flying into phx, but I can’t miss Wednesday morning so I’ll be stuck watching on tv.

Braun was like 1 of 7 on field goals and 2 of 4 from the stripe. He’s been struggling. I hope he comes out and has an amazing game against the johnnies. So far Oscar Frayer has been helping quite a bit, but we need Braun’s aggressiveness to draw fouls and swing momentum!

I’m disappointed in our bigs right now. Vernon can’t stay out of foul trouble. Lever isn’t producing much, and Blumbergs is hit or miss although he’s getting some better. I’m also disappointed that Jackson isn’t getting more time on the floor but he hasn’t been overly strong this year. Think his back may still be bothering him? Smith has had a few good looks especially being fed by Carr, but overall we need Vernon on the floor to establish that presence.

There are no moral victories tomorrow. Win, or don't. I hope we are up into the wee hours of Wednesday morning talking, tweeting, and typing about the former. Not confident by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly hopeful.

I do not believe we sold out our allotment of tickets. I checked this morning and there were still seats available in the GCU section. Most of the lower bowl was full though so we should have a great crowd. I'll be there cheering on the Lopes. Hope Braun has a great bounce back game.

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
I've watched GCU a few times. And, although Braun and Benson are good shooters they give up some lateral speed on defense. The Lopes will struggle against quicker more athletic teams. From what I've seen, both NMSU and Seattle U are much quicker on the perimeter than GCU. And, Seattle U, Utah Valley, and Cal State Bakersfield have the size to give GCU trouble scoring in the paint. However, a lot of GCU's young players have a lot of upside if Majerle can get them more developed by March. Frayer, Blumbergs, Lever, and Aidoo still have a lot more in the tank.

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
Stats I liked from tonight’s game:
18-8 GCU in O boards
46-42 GCU in Boards overall
GCU forced 18 turnovers
GCU shot 25% from 3 (Suprising from coming into the season)
Stats I didn’t like:
54% from the free throw line
30% from the field overall
21 total turnovers

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
Coach summed it up best...

"We're just soft, man."

To your guys' credit, Aggie fans tried warning us GCU fans about what a cupcake, home-heavy schedule could do to a team. If these Lopes don't develop some toughness on the road in December (@ Boise St, Louisville, & Illinois), critics will be proven 100% correct.

The GCU team on the floor last night is fully capable of losing 6-8 games come WAC play. There are no silver linings. There are no moral victories. Let's see where Majerle & staff go from here...

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
GCU is soft because Majerle consistently starts underclassmen over his veterans. Thunder Dan has failed players like Gerard Martin, Kerwin Smith, and Matt Jackson. You don't think it doesn't effects the psyche of his veterans when Majerle starts a freshman over them? At this point in their college careers, there is no way players like Blumbergs, Lever, and Frayer should get more playing time than veterans like Martin, Jackson, and Smith. If Majerle had done his job correctly, Martin, Jackson, and Smith would be better defenders, rebounds, and more mentally tough (after 4-5 years in the GCU system) than any underclassmen; let along any incoming freshman. Soft? "Toughness" comes with experience and veteran leadership.

But Thunder Dan continues to get enamored by his shiny new toys each year... Frayer can jump out the of gym... Blumbergs can hit threes!

Just my opinion.

RE: GCU vs. St. Johns
What's up with Braun? He doesn't look right. A ten point loss AT HOME to San Diego says it all, a middle of the pack WCC team. The reality is NMSU has not faced any test other than St. Mary's on the road and it was a loss. Tonight's game vs. decent San Diego team is going to give us a little bit of a measuring stick of where NMSU is compared to GCU. So far GCU has not impressed me with the two decent teams they have played. No matter how you slice it, the St. Johns loss is another home loss. GCU in the future if they want to be taken seriously needs to schedule more away games vs. good teams in their OCC schedule. I know good teams are terrified of the Havocs but you really need to schedule better teams than what is on your home schedule this year. Look what it has done to your RPI. It also gives players, coaches and fans a false impression of how good your team really is. The team looks like they are working their tales off but if they keep losing that is going to disappear too. BTW, I said 10-14 point loss and they lost by 8 and it wasn't even that close.

Ahhhh, sweet poetic justice. I guess a five point home loss to USD is better than a ten point loss, yeah?

Gonzaga, St. Mary's? Yes, decent but middle of the pack in their conference. You obviously ignored where I said NMSU had not played anybody good and this game would be a measuring stick for NMSU. NMSU failed. It exposed a lot and right now Seattle and UVU are probably ahead of NMSU and GCU the way they are playing vs. good competition. I'm willing to admit when NMSU sucks and make no excuses for terrible play. BTW, congrats on Nevada's performance. They look legit.

Dancing, the good thing is that it’s early in the season and both GCU and NMSU have ample time to figure things out and make adjustments prior to conference play. It matters the most which team is peaking at the right time in early March!

In the mean time, let’s hope for some improved play sooner than later :)
