This conference should be thankful for the challenge to prove itself worthy of the advertised “POWER 6” status. Think of the ramifications if UCF beats the SEC west representative: An American school possibly ranked in the top 10 next season. Therefore, the risk of losing to a highly esteemed SEC school is worth the possible reward of a higher ranking for UCF along with more respect earned for this conference….

But UCF lost their Head Coach who got them there so UCF can only start the season as high as #23...

I see your point.... Nevertheless, if #12 UCF beats #7 Auburn, I think it will at least receive a #15 ranking next season–which will depend on its new coach. Consequently, I agree with you: UCF has to hire a reputable coach that will enhance its creditability….

If USF started this year ranked #19 after beating South Carolina in OT and finishing with 2 losses, I think undefeated UCF over Auburn would come back as sure top 10.

But then again you look at their schedule and see they have 2 very winnable p5 games against UNC and Pitt and a good g5 game against FAU, plus they play Navy and SMU at home. If they can manage to beat Memphis away (good chance they're ranked), that would set up USF away for another rivalry classic.

The pollsters might see the schedule and worry they'd give UCF a real chance at the playoffs if they rank them too high to start....win over Auburn and they'll start 14th, right behind Miss St.

I think it is safe to say that the CFP committee does not care how biased they look when considering G5 teams. They will even contradict their own qualifying statements by the week and still not care. We saw that this year. So I do not think they will care one bit if the AP/coaches have them as top 5 and the committee comes out with their first poll with them sitting at 20.
