If we do not beat Syracuse that will be quite disappointing, as it will mean we are no better than an average G5 again. Having said that, after watching how we do things now with this staff, I would almost predict a loss right now. Premature though I guess, particularly since Lester and staff could change how they do things.

We have a very good schedule all around next year. If we have a team which will compete for a MAC championship, we will be no worse than 3-1 in our non-conference games. We need to have a gung-ho killer, take no names attitude against our opponents, and it needs to start with Lester and his staff. No more "managing" games. It doesn't work. our offense needs to be creative and keep defenses guessing. Same with the D.

Seemingly, Syracuse always has a serious problem with aggressive defenses. Blitz that OL, and there's a good chance to come out with a win. Sit back in zone coverage, and we will get crushed.

Agreed. Aggressiveness is always a great way to approach a game like that anyway, and if the team we are playing is vulnerable to blitzing, give them he11.

Syracuse comes in next year with possible top round QB. Don't think the Orange won't be improved over 2017

He's vulnerable to pressure. Force him to make quick reads, and Eric will make mistakes.

Good thing we excel at rushing the passer... oh wait!

NT and 3 tech are supposed to control the interior gaps, to protect against the run. NT takes the A's and the 3 tech gets a B (also can go through if he's got a clear shot). DEs are there to hold the edges against runs off tackle and contain the QB on pass plays. An interesting thing about the DL coach is that he's teaching the DL to use the OL as obstacles to create havoc. He likes to see our DL shove the OL back into plays. LBs and blitzing DBs are supposed to be the ones getting most of the sacks and TFLs.

This is my issue with our defense. Pressure is great, when you can actually get home and affect the offenses' timing. I completely understand what you are saying, problem is the linebackers and safeties aren't getting home enough. Or even getting the QB to hurry. That to me means, that either A) we don't have good enough players, or B) the schemes or pressure packages aren't disguised well enough to cause the confusion.

I don't believe A was the case. We had a lot of good players on our defense.

Last year, with much of the same personnel, we played a more conservative defense, but it was predicated on not letting people get behind you, and then coming up and making the tackle. They would blitz once in a while and it seemed to get home more often because it was either disguised better or more of a surprise. We also tackled well.

I can't explain the issues tackling other than it potentially being a change to a more aggressive mindset and guys are out of position. As well as some inexperience in the safety area.

Hopefully the 2nd year in the defense helps clean some things up.

IMO the #1 reason our defense took a step back was our offense not dominating TOP like last year.

#2, I fear, is that our DC tandem was a downgrade. As many speculated at the time of hire. Hopefully this is wrong and it was just growing pains getting used to a new system.

TOP has something to do with it. They played good assignment football though.

I agree with both of these. I didn't expect to dominate TOP like last year, but expected more than what we saw - especially in the 2nd half of games.
