MAC Hoops Whiparound
Feel free to add to this thread. I'll start with a couple of our favorite MAC foes:

Akron is a somewhat quiet 3-2 with wins over Cleveland State, Tennessee Martin and Tennessee Chattanooga. Akron's two losses are against Dayton and Marshall, so you've got figure 3-2 was as good as expected.

Leading the way for Akron so far is 6'6 sophomore Daniel Utomi. He is averaging nearly 23 points and 8 rebounds per game. The other familiar name is Jimond Ivey who is scoring just over 10 points a night. Coach John Groce seems to have an 8 man rotation with his very young roster. The Zips feature 9 freshman or sophomores, 2 juniors and 2 seniors. Only one of the seniors, Canadian guard Malcolm Duvivier, is contributing. Look for the Zips to enter conference play with a 7-3/6-4 record.

Bowling Green is 7-2 with some decent mid - major wins over Drexel and Florida Gulf Coast. BG's 9 man rotation features four double digit scorers. Sophomore Dylan Frye and freshman Justin Turner are both averaging over 16 points per game. That is a pretty impressive young back-court. Those two are joined by 5'10 Rodrick Caldwell, also a sophomore and also averaging double digit points.

The Falcons are also getting production from 6'10 Demajeo Wiggins (15 points/7 rebounds). Wiggins is only a junior. Looks like Bowling Green is going to compete for it this year, and be ready to really rock next season. They have three more intriguing games before MAC play opens with Evansville, Old Dominion and Green Bay. I'll say 9-3 when MAC play opens.

Interesting that no MAC team is below .500 right now.

Despite a recent claim by the college basketball beat writer at the plain dealer, Kent State remains very much alive for a top 4 seed in next month's Mid American Conference Tournament.

Lets assume that there is one spot left considering Buffalo and Toledo are locks and Ball State seems to be playing their best basketball at the right time. The Cardinals are two games up on the the next closest teams.

Here is a look at the 5 teams fighting for that last bye:

Bowling Green State (7-7):
The Falcons host Akron on Tuesday and travel to the MAC Center on Saturday for what amounts to a must win for both teams. They wrap up the season with a home game against Ohio U. and a trip to Buffalo. Go Zips! Go Bobcats!

Eastern Michigan University (7-7):
EMU has won two straight to get back into this thing. But they have two games left with Toledo and a roadie at Western Michigan. Tough sledding for sure. Go Rockets!

Kent State University (7-7):
The good guys are part of the reason EMU is still hanging on. But that is another story. The Flashes have a rough road ahead with no room for error starting Tuesday at Ohio U., Saturday vs. BG and next week vs. Miami and at Akron. Go Flashes!

Western Michigan University (7-7):
WMU has to feel pretty good with two games left against Central, a nationally televised contest with Ball State and a showdown with Eastern Michigan. I give them the inside track.

Miami University (6-8):
I am going to guess that after Buffalo beats them on Tuesday they are out. But stranger things have happened in the MAC.

Go Flashes! Go Rockets! Go Chips!

Elton is amazing. We are tied for fourth in the standings with four winnable games and he says we have no chance. I don’t understand how you can look at the standings and schedule and say that with certainty. Of course today I read an article that was criticizing the US Olympic team (they deserve some considering the money they spend) and they seemed to be surprised that Norway has won the most medals. You know the country that has won the most medals all time. These guys really rely on their readers knowing nothing. Unfortunately it must work.

I think it will take 11-7 to get the 4th spot. If so, then Miami is already eliminated.

EMU would have to beat UT twice: unlikely.
BG has to beat Buffalo in Buffalo: unlikely.
KSU has to win all four, but I don't think it is that rough a road. Can you think of four other teams that it would be better to play? I can't. I won't say easy because winning 4 in row in the MAC with 2 on the road is never easy no matter who you play, but we get the two division teams we are battling (BG, Miami) at home and the two bottom teams on the road.
WMU has to beat CMU in Mt. Pleasant in a big rivalry game. They should but that's a tough game. EMU can beat them too, but I agree that WMU has slightly the best shot.

Of course, all this probably changes after each game...

The Flashes should be favored in every game so they just need to deliver.

EA is clueless as he has ever been, still bashes Kent at every turn.

Best misquote ever was when he quoted Jon Fleming as saying “I wine and dine with these guys.” Fleming clearly said “I ride or die with these guys.” Even I knew that And you guys know how I feel about the hipity hop.

I also appreciated that he misspelled Kellen Thomas every chance he had.

Other than the fact that Elton is an idiot, the most annoying thing for me is when he calls us Kent. The university has been stressing for years that reporters and media members refer to us as Kent State or KSU.
