This should mean the following:

NMSU - Arizona
App State/Ark State/Troy - Dollar General/Cure/New Orleans
Georgia State - Camellia

Arkansas State and Troy (both 6-1 SBC) are playing each other right now, and the winner will be 7-1 alongside Appalachian State.

The Sun Belt was apparently considered for a tie-in with the Frisco (née Miami Beach) Bowl, but that will be American vs. an at-large selection, likely C-USA given their situation.

There could be a swap with the New Mexico bowl with either CUSA or the MW.

The Arizona Bowl issued a statement last night saying they would be thrilled to host New Mexico State in their bowl. That's a done deal.

Sounds like it. However, we have seen bowl swaps before and given NMSU's finances, the NM bowl would a better deal for them. However, the AZ bowl will be best for the players as the AZ bowl does a bang up job and as many coaches have said they compare it to how they were treated in prior BCS bowls.
This will be a bowl that will move up the pecking order in the next bowl cycle.

I agree it could happen, but IIRC, the New Mexico Bowl is about as far away from NMSU as the Arizona Bowl is.

If i were a player I'd rather make an out of state trip, makes it seem more like a real bowl game.

In good weather Albuquerque is about 45 minutes closer to Las Cruces then Tucson

Weather is much nicer in late December in Tucson though

Probably more alumni in the Albuquerque area although phoenix has quite a few

Whether it’s in Albuquerque or Tucson, they’ll show up in big numbers. They have alumni in El Paso, all over New Mexico and Phoenix. This is a once in a lifetime chance to see the Aggies play in a bowl game. I’m really happy for them.

The Independents should have one guaranteed bowl tie in as the list of independents grows. 05-stirthepot 07-coffee3

Eastern Michigan was able to make a bowl last year for the first time in 30 years so why not NMSU in a bowl this year.

That's a great point now there are 5 independents that aren't in a P5 conference (BYU, Army, NMSU, UMass, Liberty) you would have to think the G5 at least will try to put a few bowls together to accommodate.

MAC could throw up a Hall of Fame bowl in Canton vs. UMass/Liberty if bowl eligible for an easy bowl win.

Yeah about 50 miles longer to Tucson and the seniors for NMSU have played twice in Albuquerque.

Pretty remarkable -- and a testament to how many bowl games there are today -- that every FBS program that's been around for at least 10 years has been to at least one bowl game in the last 10 years.

When 78 or 80 of 128 teams go bowling every year, that is not hard to do.

Think about how depressed a NMSU fan would be in 1960 if you told them their next bowl wouldn't come until 2017. Whenever you have it rough just remember it could be worse. Kudos to them for sticking with it and finding a bit of success however small it may seem.

From 1981 to present NMSU was in a conference with at least one bowl tie. Just one conference title in that span would have ended the drought.

RE: The drought is over!! New Mexico State is going to a bowl game!!
Sadly, we do have schools at the FCS levels that had winning seasons at the D1 level back in the early days, and if they move up? They would be the longest drought.

If Wichita State adds football, and joins FBS? They would have the record.
Schools like Mcneese State and Furman last appearance in the late 1970s and early 1980s. West Texas A&M would have a drought if they move up. Saint Mary's if they kept football would be the longest drought over New Mexico State.
Hardin-Simmons, Catholic U., Case Western Reserves, Southwestern Texas, Denver, Georgetown, Pacific, George Washington, Villanova, Wichita State, Washington and Lee, Catawba, Maryville, Murray State, Sul Ross State, Saint Vincent, University of Charleston, emory and Henry, Stetson, Texas A&M-Commerce (Citrus Bowl), Tennessee Tech, Omaha (Citrus Bowl), Eastern Kentucky, Juniata, Missouri Valley State, Presbyterian, The Citadel, Lamar, Coast Guard (Citrus Bowl 1963), UMass. 1964 Citrus Bowl and they lost, Maine, Morgan State, West Chester, Tenn. Martin, Richmond, Davidson, William and Mary, Tampa 1972 Citrus bowl, Rollins, Florida southern, Samford, Georgia Military (JC), UCA, Centre, West Virginia Wesleyan, Centenary LA, Redlands, Drake, Occidental, Xavier, Dayton, Pittsburg State, Linfield, Central Oklahoma, Lenoir-Rhyne, St. John's NY, Prairie View, Montana State, Sacramento State, LA State, UC-Santa Barbara, San Francisco State, Humboldt State, North Dakota State, Montana, Chico State, north Dakota, Cal. Poly, Delaware, Northern Michigan, Wayne State, Tennessee State, West alabama, Lehigh, Jacksonville State, Florida A&M, Idaho State,

The longest drought right now in the FBS is UMass.

The most important thing is weather. Albuquerque could have snow on the field; its not warm in the winter there.

2016 was the year of Eastern Michigan and Idaho. 2017 is the year of New Mexico State and Alabama-Birmingham. Great 2 years in college football.

I can't speak for the players, but if it was me, the weather in either place would be fine. IIRC, in winter, Tucson is beautiful, not the furnace it is in the summer, with temps around 70 degrees during the day and crisp at night. And as you say, ALBQ is considerably cooler, with frequent cold days in the 40s and 50s, which suit me fine as well. :)

I am in the Albuquerque area. Currently 39 with a high of 45 and a low of 23 forecast. It is overcast. Not necessarily typical , but not that unusual in December. I will be going to the game in Tucson.
