RE: MBB vs UTRGV
It's weird because every time I watch the team I feel as if our opponents are getting so many good perimeter looks, but we're 40th in the country in 3PT% defense (29.6%). So statistically, we're a fairly bad defensive team (ranked 237th in defensive efficiency) while also one of the best teams defending the 3, which is...problematic.

I feel like you do with regard to open 3’s. It does seem like we give up a ton but the stats don’t reflect that. It does seem, like today, that we give 3’s up in bunches. Most of the made 3’s by UTRGV came in two stretches one in each half.

They actually have more basketball history than Rice, as they used to be Pan American- NAIA Championship when NAIA was still something. Luke Jackson and Otto Moore played there, Texas stole their coach, Abe Lemons, who had so much success Daryl Royal had him run off.

Still should not lose to them.

FTR, we're now 5-7 all-time vs. Pan American U / UT-Pan American / UT-Rio Grande Valley:

D10, 1974 W 80-71 Houston
D21, 1974 L 81-83 Edinburg
D20, 1975 L 87-107 Edinburg
D30, 1975 L 66-95 Mobile, Ala.
D16, 1978 L 72-75 The Summit
N13, 1998 W 80-40 Houston
J3, 2000 L 62-72 Edinburg
J10, 2001 W 75-71 Houston
D27, 2001 L 64-81 Houston
J8, 2003 W 85-79 Edinburg
D20, 2003 W 69-58 Houston
D2, 2017 L 69-67 Houston

Here are the institution's names over the years:

Junior College:
Edinburg College, 1926-1933
Edinburg Junior College, 1933-1948
Edinburg Regional College, 1948-1952

Senior College:
Pan American College, 1952-1971
Pan American University, 1971-1989
Univ. Texas Pan American, 1990-2015
Univ-Texas Rio Grande Valley, 2015-

(Note: My father is a proud 1941 graduate of Edinburg Junior College. :-) )

I was at the 12/10/74 game. IIRC Abe got tossed in the second half then got another technical for trying to lurk in the tunnel.

Abe always had a good time at Autry Court didn't he?

Another name conspicuous in its absence from the box score is that of Najja Hunter.

Hmmm. There must be a typo in the Rice MBB fact book (p. 130), because multiple newspaper reports -- such as the one below from the Waxahachie Daily Light -- show this game to have occurred in December 15, 1973. Pan Am was called for seven technical fouls ... four against Abe. Wow!

(BTW, the Clovis (New Mexico) News-Journal published a longer version of the UPI article that said Moriarty led the Owls with 24 points ... 6 from technical foul shots. (Its online image was lower quality, however, so I chose the shorter one from the Waxahachie paper.)

Crazy to think that a Waxahachie Paper was publishing stories about a Rice game vs. an NAIA Opponent. Shows how far we’ve fallen (both Rice athletics and newspapers).

Agree. Back, even in 1994 we got Hatfield who had walked from Clemson (where he was 32-13). We've fallen a long long way.

That shows the value of Rice's being in the SWC. That Waxahachie page also had stories about TCU beating Lamar and Baylor over San Angelo ... and Howard Payne over Sul Ross.

The page was dominated, understandably, by articles about Waxahachie teams' performances in high school tourneys, four photos from the B-team tournament ... and two articles about gun violence: a local shooting injury and a wire story about four shot in Detroit.

RE: MBB vs UTRGV
UTRGV was well coached and really showed disciplined passing skills against the Owls. They attached the basket and made the Owls pay for all of their defensive lapses. Their defense did not allow many fast breaks and overall played better than Rice did. Still there was some bright spots for the Owls. Dylan Jones played some valuable minutes of the bench. Despite missing the potential winning shot at the end of the game, Bishop Mency contributed both offensively and defensively, which was very helpful. His play inside the paint was quite good. You can literally see Malik Osborne get better each game. I think Owl fans will be quite pleased with his game by the time he gets 20 to 30 games under his belt. That being said, there are still a ton of holes on this team and it will take a great of hard work (and perhaps luck) to win 10 games this year.

I really like how Coach Pera is using his bench overall and is allowing his players to learn on the court. He is pulling players when they are not producing and making dumb mistakes (Austin Meyer has been struggling lately and his PT has been severely reduced).

As far as confusion on the court during the last 20 seconds, Connor was being guarded tightly and could not find a seam to attack the basket. Rice does not have a player that can really break down a good defender off the dribble and score. I was pleased that he found the open man and I thought Bishop's shot was going in, but it hit the back rim. More disturbing to me is the continued inability to shoot free throws successfully during critical spots in the game. You have to be able to close out an opponent from the FT line.

RE: MBB vs UTRGV
Rice's best basketball years were before Pan Am became a senior college which were the 1940s and early 1950s.

RE: MBB vs UTRGV
December 1973 would have been in Moriarity's junior season. The seniors next year did not get much playing time next year when Polk came in and wanted to play younger players for experience so 1974-75 was not a good season.
