Of course, Currie wasn't there very long and was a buffoon anyway, so maybe Phil was just the 'right person at the right time' or....the ONLY person at the time who wasn't incompetent or compromised. I mean this is the worst public relations disaster since...Mike Price at 'Bama. The George O'Leary debacle is bad, but that was on him.

In this case, it reflects very badly on UT and pretty much only UT.

I had lunch with someone that has spent his entire adult life in college athletics and is "connected"...he told me that 7 people have turned down the UT head coaching job thus far.

I lived in Knoxville during that time. Majors ran a conservative run first offense. Boring, but effective.
Majors needed heart surgery, so Fulmer was promoted to interim head coach while Majors got better.
Fulmer opened up the offense, and UT fans went nuts. They loved it.
Majors saw what was happening, and came back, maybe a bit early...but it was back to the old run first stuff again.
UT fans revolted, wanted Fulmer as head coach, and Majors 'retired'.

So why would this fat Phil Hickerson looking slob want to be back at a place that fired him?

because in hindsight, he's kind of like their Tommy West. Won a national championship there, a lot of fans didn't like the way he was fired, etc.

There's a strange divide right now over that campus. I don't know what's going on.

They rejected the outsourcing with JLL, and now they blocked Schiano and fired Currie.

It's like someone wants to get rid of the Haslams influence over the University. Probably, the rest of the old establishment as well.

This isn't going to end well.
