Rice drops the first set, 21-25.

The match was close all the way ... tied at 10 & 11, when Texas State went on a 4-point run that the Owls could not close. Rice got within 1 several times, including at 21-22 ... but the Bobcats ended it with a 3-point run.

Owls lose the second set by the same score: 21-25.

Rice led 15-12 and 18-17 ... but Texas St. then went on a 4-point run and won 8 of the final 11 points.

Rice looses 3-0 sets. Could not win one damn set. Very disappointing. Maybe we should hire their coach.

Uh, no. Chisum has been there for 30+ years and would never leave San Marcos.

JK can only handle one coaching search per year, but Volpe is not cutting it for Volleyball.

Let's just say that after four straight 20-win seasons, the sentiment that she is "not cutting it" is not shared in College Station.

I heard on Wednesday night at the WBB game, that A&M is very interested in talking with her about their coaching vacancy.

I would be surprised if she were anywhere near the top of their list, if they're considering her at all.

I wouldn't be surprised at all and that's why I posted about the A&M opening in the other volleyball thread. Volpe is an A&M legend and that job to her is probably similar to Rhoades with the VCU job.

Lol, seriously?

Rice volleyball treads water when it should be dominating the conference, and craters in postseason play.

Why should it be? Do we have resources to be a volleyball powerhouse?

For the record, they have the 3rd highest winning percentage in conference play over the last 4 years. Made it to the conference final in 2014 and 2016 and lost 5 setters to WKU, the dominant team in C-USA the last 4 years (57-3 regular season record, now 4-time defending champ).

This argument is... infuriating. It's the argument for keeping Bailiff. Winning records is as good as poor little Rice can do.

I mean, you said we should be dominating the conference. I show data that says we are doing pretty well (72% winning percentage), but not to your standard apparently.

So, why do you think we should be dominating this league? Are we equipped to do so and underachieving?

Why not dominate the league? The goal is Top 25 in all sports, especially non-revenue. Are we there yet? Is the current coach going to get us there, or has she peaked?

Are you content with mediocrity?

I don't know enough about volleyball to tell you how good a job Volpe is doing and whether she should or could be doing better. Apparently well enough that A&M could be interested.

We are in the top 20-25% or so of all programs according to RPI, I'd say that's better than mediocre.

I'll let those who know more about the state of the program give their two cents.

How many conference championships the last 4 years? What is the RPI rating the last four years? Has she ranked in the top 25,like soccer, in the last four year or even 5 years? Rhoades had a good W-L record while at Rice but you can have if you play a bunch of powder puff schools.

The weird thing is to me is that Volpe has had some good "P5" wins... They beat MS St and Wake Forest this year... Beat LSU and Colorado in 2015... Just seems to wilt late in the season.
