Since he chose us over UVA I have to think it has something to do with what position he was being recruited to play. Does anyone know if BW likes him at QB or possibly wide receiver?
Have to say a rangy, 6' 5" WR sounds nice!

He's coming here to play QB. Think I saw UVA wanted him on defense.

It was either LB or TE, I can't recall. There is a article on it on 247 I believe.

This is great news. I would really prefer a kid to come in and develop, even in non-redshirt years, and then become a starter in their Junior seasons. The redshirt season matters a lot for these guys.

Out of 9 seasons, we’ve had bad QB play in one season ( with freshman starter) and averageish (with freshman starter then DW)in another. The other 7 have been really good.

I'll give a pass with Steven Williams because he is a true frosh but Bentley had a year to learn and this Larussa, Arnold and Hoy debacle wouldn't have happened if we had a QB coach who can evaluate and see if any of these guys are worthy to set their foot on the field let alone failing after going through drills during the off season. Whitcomb is still basking the glory of Heinicke era.

Whitcomb got good play from an FCS QB competing at the FBS level. We all know Bentley did not work out, it happens. People want to diss him for Bentley (understandable), but refuse to give him credit for DeMarco, Heinicke, Washington. And when WIlliams is a good QB, I'm sure the same people will say "we were just lucky to get Williams."

Larussa could have started all year if the coaches wanted to do that. Williams was the best QB on the roster and they chose to go with him despite him being 17 years old. Whether that decision was the right one or not can be debated.

You are all wrong if you think that Whitcomb has much say in who the Qb is gonna be as far as who plays, or who gets reps in practices. Two other coaches have more say then he does.
One says who gets reps and who starts. Whitcomb's job is to coach the Qbs. I believe he is a very good coach/teacher and can evaluate the position way better then most credit him for. Whitcomb is not the only recruiter of the position. Two other coaches do that as well. Your looking in the wrong place to place blame.

I honestly believe that Ron Whitcomb is one of the best young QB's coaches in the country. We would be foolish to get rid of him. Doesn't matter how good the quarterback is if he doesn't have any weapons. Where are the Tight Ends we were promised? Where are the Wide Receivers we were supposed to be developing? The lack of talent all over the field is appalling. Losing Lawry is going to be tough. I am not as optimistic about next year as some of you, obviously.

Have to wonder about the receivers coach. Did he do the best he could with what he had to work with, or did the lack of production have more to do with inadequate coaching? One thing I noticed on those side line throws, the other receivers always did a piss poor job of blocking. Whose fault is that?

I think the wr coaching left a lot to be desired. Harper did a lot after the catch towards the end of the season. But lots of bad route running and giving up on the routes for a lot of the season. That got better towards the end from what I could tell. But that's on the coach right?

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

I have heard the suggestion that, if there is one seat that is warm, it belongs to the wr coach.

Can't argue with that. The difference of productivity from Burden to Forrest has been like the end of Thelma and Louise.

Saying he is one of the best in the country is crazy. There is a reason he is coaching in CUSA and not for a P5 team. A P5 team could pay him several times what he receives from ODU.

I stand by my opinion. Whitcomb remains below the radar, for now that is.

I believe Whitcomb is a fine quarterback coach. Just find some receivers that can catch the ball and a tight end and some help on the offensive line and our quarterback will be fine.
