https://www.10tv.com/article/teen-trying...cincinnati
Quote:Fire officials say a 13-year-old boy trying to kill a bed bug sparked an apartment building fire that displaced eight people and caused $300,000 in damage in Cincinnati.
Officials say the fire was reported around 11 p.m. Tuesday and began when the teen lit a match after dousing a bed bug with alcohol. Six apartment units were damaged in the fire.

Trust me....I can imagine after 20 years of dealing with low income apartment complexes.
The kicker was the night we got a carbon monoxide alarm call at a complex at oh-God-thirty one morning. We'd been on the road a couple of minutes when it hit me....this complex was all electrical heat with no gas to the building so there shouldn't have been any sources of carbon monoxide. We figured it was going to be a defective alarm but our CO monitor pegged the instant we walked in the door. We started going door to door evacuating and got to one with no answer. All of the neighbors said that the occupant should be home so the property manager opened the door for us. We walk in to find a Weber charcoal grill sitting in the kitchen. We drag it outside and start ventilating the building apartment by apartment when the occupant comes home. He thought it was a great idea since it was raining and you couldn't grill on the balcony to just open the windows and balcony door and grill inside. If it hadn't been for one overly safety conscious resident it's quite possible we would have had multiple fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning because of one idiot.

The more people you put together in tighter areas, the more likely you are to be surrounded by morons.
There was an apartment fire about a 5 minute drive from my home in NW Ohio that was started because a teen was burning photos of her newly ex-boyfriend and trying to SnapChat it at the same time. Unless she has a third arm, one of those three things wasn't in her hand, and lo and behold, this independent thinker decided to put the burning object on the floor of her kitchen...near a gas stove. Luckily she wasn't killed, unluckily her parents are on the books for a $9M apartment fire with no insurance to cover.
There are stories like this from just about every apartment that has had something happen to it in the world.

I generally agree, but I'd still rather live in an apartment than my parents house... and that is the choice most young people have to make. Granted, I didn't the choice and neither will my kids.

My sister doted on her disabled daughter and sometimes had to get up at night to help her. She thought putting a towel over a lamp and placing the lamp under the bed would help. She didnt want to wake us up with too much light it's a good thing that someone was able to smell the smoke from the towel that was starting to smolder. God is good and decided it wasn't our time to die in a fire.

Did she never consider a night light? They are like $2.

Nearly this same story happened years ago at a rather nice, upscaleish apt complex about ten minutes away.
Turns out there were floodlights or something like that perhaps to light the parking lots for security (?) and some kid/teen found the light outside his window annoying. So he tosses a t shirt over it and goes to sleep.
It wasn’t a carbon monoxide instance, but instead completely burned I think it was 9 entire units nearly to the ground. No one killed thankfully, but 30 some people displaced and lost absolutely everything.
People, by and large, are just stupid.
