UPDATE: Todd Graham’s buyout is $12.3 million that is his, won’t be offset by any new job, per @ByBerkowitz. Incredibly irresponsible deal.

Absolutely. Some of these deals are mind blowing. They rival Leo Apothekar's payout after a 10 month Rick Greenspan-eqse tenure at HP and Jeff Smisek's 40 million golden parachute from United after being fired with an ongoing corruption probe. Performance doesn't matter - these deals have horrible exit clauses.

Might explain some things. Rice won’t agree to insane Exit Clauses. Thus Rice is stuck with a Candidate Pool that doesn’t warrant this financial consideration.

And if any New Hire turns things around then Rice gets stuck in the “Bailiff Trap” once again.

I don't know who insists on these crazy buyout clauses. I speculate it is the school - protecting another school from coming by snooping and if they do, putting them on the hook for a payout. In this case, if the Toad had kept up his first few years and another "dream job" had popped up in the $EC, then ASU would be owed a chunk of change for their next coach. Kind of like Ronaldo's 1 billion buyout or whatever at Real Madrid.

With Rice.. at our budget, it isn't that much of an issue. Whatever buyout we put in place, it isn't going to stop a UT or LSU from poaching our guy, they can afford it. Would be interesting if we could work a lower buyout as if our guy wants to leave.. then let him; employees who don't want to be there are rarely an asset to an organization.

RE: Graham gone (the other one, relax)
I'd still go with paying as much as we can with tiny buyouts both ways. There are guys who are young and aggressive who want to come here 3 years, turn it around, and parlay it into a bigger deal somewhere else. That's fine with me. A guy who does that will leave us in far better shape than he finds us, and the next guy can take the next step.

With a tiny buyout, if we make a mistake we can get rid of him more easily. If we're going to be changing coaches, we need to be able to get rid of a mistake easily.

I agree 100% that if he wants to leave, he won't be a positive staying here. So let him go. Nothing would make me happier than to hire a guy and have aTm or LSU or ND hire him away in 3 years. Just think how good we would have to be to make that happen. I'd much rather have somebody that they want than somebody that nobody wants.

I am not sure that Kevin Sumlin, (or any highly qualified coaching candidate) will take a job where he is forced to keep the current remaining coaching staff, which seems to be the stance of the ASU VP of Athletics. His only problem was with the head coach, and that was such a problem that he is willing to take an $12.3 mm haircut from his budget. There must have been some really bad blood between coach Graham and the Athletic department head.

Todd Graham is as sleazy as they come, but to my knowledge, he never killed 5 hookers at SMU.

For $12 million, you'll keep a lot of people on staff. And if one of them doesn't work out, he'll leave on his own in a year or two, at most.

I read somewhere that UT has paid somewhere in neighborhood of 50+ million dollars to get Herman and company in place.

Bought out Mack, paid the buyout to Strong's former employer (4.5 million) and all the buyouts of his assistants (another 2 million or so). Then they paid him roughly 20 million for the years worked and another 20 million-ish for his assistants during his tenure.

Come 4 years later they buyout Strong and all his assistants (roughly 10 million total), then pay UH all the buyout monies for Herman and all of his assistants again (5-6 million total). And on top of it you have normal 'wear and tear' of Herman's 5 million + contract and roughly 4.5 million more for assistants.

So in three years UT has gobbled through about 60 million in cash for coaches, with 28 million being burned in the 2016 season for all the Strong-era salaries, Herman-era salaries, and buyout monies

12 mill is for the JV players in college sports.....

Apparently Herm Edwards might be named the new head coach of the Sun Devils, while retaining all of Graham's old staff.
