They suppose to beat us. The majority of UTA players are from Texas who have not transferred out. I wonder this is why we loss so many players because most our players or out of state.

First strong inside move by Jones. Would like to see him play more.

We are making the same mistakes as always and I haven't seen any signs of improvement. Maybe I expected too much

24 pct FG shooting, 65 pct FT shooting. That's bad.

By the way, that EKU team that we lost to is looking HORRIBLE.

They lost to Prairie View by 10 and are currently losing to WKU by 30.

Not sure what's wrong with this team but we certainly aren't playing to our (limited) potential.

Well, shooting needs to improve.

Whatever they're doing in practice, maybe it's time to do some remedial work on basics.

RE: Rice/UTA gamethread
Positive was the 8-0 start but the 0-15 run after that pretty much negated that.

I was hoping we could get deficit below 20 or break 50 against their scrubs but couldn't quite do it. A failed 3 on 1 break late was disappointing. I am a little surprised we didn't give the end of our bench a little bit of PT at end of the game but maybe we were trying to get experience and keep score somewhat respectable.

Was nice to see a game in UTA's new building. I never got to see a game in their old place where they played on the stage of an auditorium.

played 3 games there on their "stage". Damn sure didn't want to dive out of bounds for a ball on one side of the floor

Think the defense was much improved tonight despite some lapses. Know it's tough to keep digging for positives in losses, but the way we have to look at our non-conference play is as the preseason before conference play. Figure out the right rotations + personnel, keep working on offensive fundamentals, solidify the zone.

Nah... We have to win non-conference games to be taken seriously. It is OK to take some lumps this year given the exodus, but not a good strategy in the long run.

That's what Bailiff did and it was very aggravating to many of our fans LOL.

RE: Rice/UTA gamethread
Floor leadership is sorely needed. The 22-3 run in the first half was horrible to watch. Someone has to take control and make something happen to prevent such runs. Take a charge, drive to the basket and make free throws, create a turnover. None of that level of intensity was evident last night. UTA did a great job defending Connor Cashaw and Rice had no one else to step up when needed. Malik Osborne is getting some serious playing time but he has been invisible over the last couple of games, including the win against UST. Bishop Mency hurts the team when he settles for a 3-point shot (1-6), drew no fouls and is not driving to the basket. His game has limitations and he has to adjust to have the greatest opportunity to succeed. If there was any good news coming out of this game, Robert Martin is improving and wants to make an impact. He has a long way to go but there seems to be some real upsides to his game, more than I would have thought after watching him in a limited role last year. Contrary to elw4796's comments, I thought the defense was not good last night (outside of the first 8 minutes), there were way too many open shots and easy buckets. In addition to poor shooting, there were also turnovers (at least 2) on inbound passes, which is just sloppy basketball.

RE: Rice/UTA gamethread
Rice has 3 guys who have taken 20+ shots on the season and have a FG% below 30%. Yikes!
Mency - 27.0 % (10/37)
Osborne - 29.6% (8/27)
Harrison - 26.1% (6/23)

Those guys combined are averaging 12 shots per game. Adams and Cashaw haven't shot as well as they did last season. If Adams and Cashaw don't start shooting more consistently, it is going to be a long season.

Three losses by 20+ points is tough. I know the schedule is tougher this year, but the 2014-15 team (Rhoades' 1st season) did not lose a single game by more than 15 points.

I guess what I should've said is that we played defense well enough for it to have been a winnable game. We basically had no chance against Georgia State, UNLV, and Ole Miss, and I thought with some better shotmaking this game could've been tight. I agree that we missed assignments and there were too many open shots, but I saw far fewer than in previous games.

Excellent point. In Rhoades Y1 we had Seth fill that role. Rhoades Y2 it was Max.

Fair enough. Further in your defense, Coach Pera stated in his post game press conference that he thought the Owls played with defensive intensity and he also tweeted the same today. I just may be hyper-critical when I see as many easy baskets as I saw last night.
