Could have been positioning himself for another job. Figure this time next week Tennessee will be down to his name on their list for their football opening.

Unbelievable that he was never dismissed by ECU. Million dollar question would be how long would he have been able to hold on to that job if he didn't step down.

Compher’s reign of terror at NIU and ECU has been very impressive.

Interesting point.
However, ECU pulled the trigger really quickly on their last two coaches. Stokes was fired after 2 years, and McCarthy was fired after 3.
Both were bad, but it's a no-win job. Even Bill Herrion couldn't get them to a winning record in 6 years, and he's a really good coach. (Before ECU, he took Drexel to 3 of their 4 all-time NCAA tourney appearances. After being fired from ECU, he was hired by New Hampshire, which only had 6 winning seasons since WW2. He's been there 12 years, and 3 of those were easily the 3 best seasons in UNH history.)
So maybe ECU was trying to show the next coach that they will give him time to succeed before firing him? I'm just guessing.

The only reason he stuck around this long this season was because of his buyout. He had a long contract and it would have cost ECU millions.

Amazing that he outlasted Ruffin McNeill. Ruff is BELOVED in that town.
Compher should be next.

RE: Jeff Lebo resigns as ECU basketball coach
He had some ECU success early on, and I would suggest he exceeded early ECU expectations...even if it was the CIT tournament. AAC was just too much for him, and he has been losing talent year after year, we just can't keep good talent here, that's assuming we can recruit good talent to begin with.
