I think what you’re more likely to see is the Big Sky slim down. Better to have two bids for sixteen schools than one bid for eleven schools or more.

The group that the WAC is stuck with would probably be the following:

New Mexico State (at least until the next CFP contract, possibly longer)
Grand Canyon
Utah Valley
Cal Baptist

Of course it’s possible one to three of Seattle, UTRGV, and UMKC are still around as well.

I think in the worst case scenario where the WAC is down to four, the Big Sky donates Northern Arizona, Southern Utah, Northern Colorado, and Sacramento State. Assuming Cal Baptist is still transitioning from Division II, the WAC is boxed in on needing existing Division I members, therefore the Big Sky takes Azusa Pacific.

Plus a number of Lone Star Conference schools are interested to join D1 as well. Have not really heard if Azusa Pacific, Dixie State and others made comments yet. A number of Lone Star schools already have. All they have to look is look at one of their former conference mates doing well in D1, and that is Houston. Sam Houston State and SFA were former Lone Star Conference as well, and they made some noise in D1. There have been rumors for 10 years plus that Colorado Mesa and Colorado State-Pueblo go to D1. Those two are ready to make the jump because they both offered all the sports that are sponsored by the WAC. So does Azusa Pacific, Tarleton State and a couple of others.

I'd like to see the Big Sky slim down to a 10 team league, but I'm not sure if any program wants to be "kicked" out. I guess Sacramento State, Northern Arizona, or Southern Utah (though they left the Summit for Big Sky so not sure they want to leave), or Northern Colorado make the most sense.

The northern/NW big sky teams are pretty untouchable.

Big Sky could add Western Washington in the future if they restart their football program.

When schools in the Southland finally gets a spot in FBS, Tarleton State and UTRGV could move over to that conference. WAC could get Humboldt State and give Big Sky Colorado mesa. WAC would be a southern Southwest conference range from Texas to California. Some of the teams may not be there in a few years. The Lone Star Conference schools right now have the money to move up.

One school I would like to see move up is Central Oklahoma. It would be great to see them compete against one of their old conference mates in Tulsa with the football. But, I do not sure that they could do that for travel reasons without a travel partner like either SW Oklahoma State, NE Oklahoma State or East Central. Maybe a Cameron or a Rogers State could do.
