RE: The WAC's Next Move
So this idea was shot down earlier, but I'll revisit it now. University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. They haven't infused the money to grow their facilities yet; however, they only need to make a couple of additions to what they already have to be able to compete in all of the WAC sports offered. They would need to build a new arena and move out of the high school gym that they are currently playing in. Their women's soccer team just went on a long run in the D2 playoffs. The basketball has D1 length, but I couldn't say anything about the talent. They allow the WAC to fix the fact that Chi St. leaving and UMKC needs a new travel partner.

This year the fb schools will announce a move. FBS transitions may be later but finish in time for a seat on the upcoming CFP negotiations. That is why college President see $ signs and want in but going FBS now doesn't have the CFP payout as the WAC lost out the last time.

I'm holding you to this. We are 32 days from 2018. I'll run a countdown for you.

So what's more likely to happen, stugray? NoDak's elaborate scenario? Or - the Big West going to 12 with one of GCU, Seattle and NMSU?

The FCS championship isn't until January 6, 2018. Need to wait a week or two after just for the celebration effect. If Sam Houston St makes it or any other Big Sky or MVFC school, that might delay an announcement.

There is no reason that the Big West goes beyond 10, which they tentatively did, unless someone is leaving. Having 20 bb games is not a reason as CBU and WCC teams need games too, and they can be had with bus rides. Who would even consider stealing a Big West school? Football is the only option that would cause a change. Was all over this board when Cameron Dollar and the former NMSU mob coach said football schools were coming, but posters here prefer to just talk among themselves than to take an insider with real info seriously. I don't this board seriously because it's populated with blowhards that don't listen to reason and don't think like college administrators who have extreme caution and are only conservative when it comes to athletic finances.

Yes there is another possible reason. It could be Cal State-UC politics demanding equal ranks, or about resolving who is #12. I agree with you that 11 is not the end game.

11 or 12 just dilute the Big West payout, and administrators would immediate veto that. Seattle or any WAC team is not going to pay a travel allowance for the cheap Big West schools. A non-California school is simply not happening - the politics are bad enough but the financial shenanigans are mind boggling.

RE: The WAC's Next Move
Seattle approached the BW back in the late 2000s. NMSU is a former member from the glory days. GCU is close by and shared a conference with four current members. On paper you can make a case.

Am I saying it WILL happen? No. But could it? Yes, if they're all that desperate to get out of the WAC. i post here enough so you can be sure I'll eat crow if I am wrong,

RE: The WAC's Next Move
The WAC's next move? Announce it's going to sponsor FCS football. Then invite Azusa Pacific and Dixie State to join the WAC as all-sports members that play football, and USD, Sac State, Cal Poly and UC Davis to join as football-only members, giving the WAC the six football programs required to qualify its football champion for an FCS playoff auto-bid.

- Azusa Pacific and Dixie State would benefit by being able to move up to D-I and rekindle their rivalries with Cal Baptist and GCU while preserving their football programs

- USD would benefit by being able to play football in a far west FCS conference rather than flying its team all over the country as a Pioneer League member

- Sac State would benefit by being able to move its Olympic sports to the Big West (rounding out the Big West's membership at 12) while having a place to put its football program

- Cal Poly and UC Davis would benefit by playing in a smaller FCS conference that gives them an easier path to the FCS playoffs

And of course the WAC would benefit the most, by adding two more far west all-sports members, enabling it to part ways with UMKC and CSU without putting its basketball auto-bid at risk. Also if UT-RGV and/or GCU decide to start FCS football programs, and/or NMSU decides to move its football program down to FCS, the WAC FCS conference would offer them all a geographically attractive conference to play in.

I like to think this could actually happen, if only because it would be fitting payback for how the Big Sky commissioner schemed back in 2011 to destroy WAC FBS football.

RE: The WAC's Next Move
I don’t see San Diego joining a WAC/Big West football league when the Big Sky has room for an extra affiliate - if USD was going to join a scholarship league, we probably would have heard about it already.

Also, if 3 of the 6 schools in WAC football are in the Big West, then it will probably be under the Big West banner, which means the WAC has to keep sponsoring baseball and football.

The WAC wait for another 8 years when the actually renewal of the CFP will happen. WAC FBS even now is long gone unless the MW splits apart takes over the WAC.

RE: The WAC's Next Move
These are the only schools that I have read that spent money upgrading their facilities or adding sports.

Colorado Mesa
Central Washington
Azusa Pacific
Dixie State
West Texas A&M
UTPB
Texas A&M-commerce
Texas A&M-Kingsville
Dallas Baptist
Tarleton State
Central Oklahoma

West Texas A&M could be the one planing on a higher level with a new on campus football stadium with an option to bring the stadium up to over 22,000.

Other schools who have been rumored to go D1 are Western Washington (no money), UMSL, Lindenwood, OKCU (but lost the chance before the new rules set in), CSU-Pueblo, Harding, Arkansas Tech, Angelo State, Alaska twins, Simon Fraser, Minot State, Colorado Mines, Southern Indiana, Augustana SD. I have not listed schools that are too far away.

As it is, several schools on this list do have a sport or two at the D1 level, and want to look to move all their sports to D1. Just like UCSD just did.

RE: The WAC's Next Move
West Texas A&M (formally West Texas State) was in the Missouri Valley with New Mexico State before the big push in the late 70's (early 80's) for Division 1A football programs to have stadiums of 30K or larger and a minimum home attendance figures of 17K or larger. Some schools like Wichita State choose to drop football; other MVC schools choose to drop down to Division 1AA. And, West Texas State choose to down size even further. This was when NMSU joined the PCAA (now the Big West).

Refusing to drop down a division, NMSU football has been trying to find a permanent FBS (Division 1) home ever since.

Rumors only in your own deluded mind. You have been told several times that upgrading facilities is not the same as building a D1 program. A total of seven schools listed here have a single sport in D1 or National Collegiate Division, six of them are because there is no D2 championship in beach volleyball, ice hockey, and water polo. Yeah, the real reason UCSD moved up: they wanted all sports to compete at the same level of the water polo and fencing teams (sports that have never had a D2 championship). I have been a part of Arkansas Tech athletics for 35 years and we have absolutely no plans for D1, it has never been mentioned.

Upgrading facilities doesn't always mean a university is looking to move to a higher level. Univ. of Central Oklahoma recently raised around $25 million to upgrade facilities on campus, but hasn't uttered a peep about trying to move-up. They seem quite content where they are. I believe West Texas A&M raised money for a new stadium because they were still playing in the dilapidated stadium they had been in when they were Division 1 in the 1970s.

Southern Indiana (who I've already mentioned on this thread) seems to be putting money into the programs/facilities with Division 1 as the desired end result. It probably pushed them a bit faster after watching enviously as former conference rival Northern Kentucky moved up and became successful at the Division 1 level. A bit of an extra driving force if you will.

the talks about Lone Star Conference and the Oklahoma schools have been coming up this year alone. Lone Star Conference is up to 19 teams. That is way too many unless schools like West Texas A&M, UTPB, Texas A&M-Commerce, Tarleton State and Kingsville moving to D1. GAC can't hold many more Oklahoma teams since they are at 12. They could get NE Oklahoma State, but that is about it. Southland have been after Central Oklahoma for a long time. I do think they could make the move to D1 because of where they are located. That would give Oklahoma 4 football schools and 5 D1 schools overall.

UTPB could be the hot girl that people will want. It is the hotbed of football recruits in that area.

Central Washington is in a fast growing region of Washington state that the leaders planned to go over 20,000 students enroll, and have a higher ceiling than just D2.

Colorado Mesa is in a large city metro. It seems that they are the only school at the lower levels in the state that are getting money to do upgrades. I think the problem with the other D2 colorado schools are already too close to Colorado, Colorado State and Northern Colorado. If the state wants another D1 state school, colorado Mesa is far enough away to not compete with the other three for students. Colorado Mesa could actually reached into Utah.

So far, the schools that I do see that might be D1 are the ones that are in the Lone Star, Azusa Pacific, Central Washington, Dixie State, Colorado Mesa and Central Oklahoma. It seems these schools do have sugar daddies who could give them money to make the move. I could throw in Montana State-Billings who also have a sugar daddy as well.
