got-
#14 Uruguay vs #4 Portugal
#7 France vs #5 Argentina

but on the bottom half-
#10 Spain vs #70 Russia
#12 Denmark vs #20 Croatia

Oh, and the top half of the bracket could easily add tomorrow just a Brazil vs Germany game. Yikes.

The FIFA national team rankings are far from perfect. Switzerland is #6, Poland is #8, Chile didn't even qualify for the World Cup and they are #9. Spain is probably a better side than Portugal regardless of the rankings, and Uruguay-Portugal looks like a pretty even match. Argentina is definitely is not playing like a top 5 team, probably not even a top 10 team.

Still, Spain is no doubt happy to be where they are in the bracket rather than where Portugal is.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
But South America only has so many spots, especially since CONCACAF cuts into South America some IIRC. There's no shame in Chile not making the Tournament when Brazil and Argentina are almost for sure gonna be in the field.

And as with any tournament, results don't always reflect who is the best.

CONCACAF's allocation doesn't cut into CONMEBOL's.

Probably, FIFA doesn't want to give CONMEBOL more World Cup spots because there are only 10 national teams in CONMEBOL. But 7 of those 10, maybe 8, are better than more than half the teams that are at the World Cup.

What I'm saying is that South America does have some members in CONCACAF, which has at least 20-30 members. By comparison, the South American federation is small and all it takes is an upset to be squeezed out because Argentina and Brazil are the dominant powers.

Mexico getting crushed 3-0 to Sweeden. If Germany can get a goal here vs South Korea, Mexico is done.

Nope. Germany suffers another crushing defeat in Russia. This time, in the summer instead of the winter. 07-coffee3

Group F was truly the group of death. Only one where everyone got at least 1 win.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
looks like Brazil is thru to face Mexico in the knockout stage.....

the top half of the bracket looking much tougher....
Uruguay 14 v Portugal 4
France 7 v Argentina 5
Brazil 2 v Mexico 15

compared to
Spain 10 v Russia 70
Croatia 20 v Denmark 12
Switzerland 6 v Sweeden 24

and top half could add #3 Belgium tomorrow if they beat England. It's funny, I think if there were ever a time to tank to not win a pool, it would be tomorrow in this situation for Belgium. Lose and you have a MUCH easier half of the bracket to make the final. Win tomorrow and you get Brazil almost surely in the QF round.

And Senegal becomes the first ever team to be eliminated from the WC on the Fair Play Tiebreaker

Another point about the strength of CONMEBOL:

4 of the 5 CONMEBOL (South America) teams in the World Cup advanced out of the group stage to the knockout rounds, as did...

10 of the 14 UEFA (Europe) teams (including host Russia)

1 of the 4 CONCACAF (North and Central America) teams

1 of the 4 AFC (Asia) teams

None of the 5 CAF (Africa) teams made it out of the group stage.

What kind of stupid ass tiebreaker is that? They'd do better to base it on made or missed shots on goal (percentage).

Even a (series of) coin flips is more fair.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
Using "fair play" as the next to last tiebreaker is just a way of avoiding the random drawing. Makes sense that you'd want to avoid the random drawing because that way you avoid allegations that the drawing was rigged. And you only get to the fair play tiebreaker if the teams are still even after the first five tiebreakers.

In Senegal's case, the difference was that they had two yellow cards during stoppage time of their draw with Japan.

Quote:TIEBREAKERS

If two or more teams are level on points, they are separated using this tiebreaker system

1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Head-to-head points
4. Head-to-head goal difference
5. Head-to-head goals scored
6. Fair play points
7. Drawing of lots

FAIR PLAY SCORING SYSTEM

Yellow card: -1
Red card for two cautions: -3
Straight red card: -4
Yellow card and straight red card: -5

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
what's going to be funny as anything is if with the England/Belgium match they're tied with the same goal differential/goals scored..... - if late we see a sub come in and do an intentional foul to get a card. Right now going into the match, England was -2 and Belgium was -3. This could get really comical late in the match. Because it would be better for the team to lose quite frankly.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
Belgium wins to advance to knockout play...

The top half of bracket is just brutal....
Uruguay 14 vs Portugal 4
France 7 vs Argentina 5
Brazil 2 vs Mexico 15
Belgium 3 vs Japan 61

the bottom half isn't so much
Spain 10 vs Russia 70
Croatia 20 vs Denmark 12
Switzerland 6 vs Sweeden 24
Columbia 16 vs England 12

the QF could be brutal up top with Portugal vs either France or Argentina and then Brazil vs Belgium. That half of the bracket is surely the bracket of death.

I'm thinking it's going to end up being Belgium vs England in the Final with Belgium winning the whole shabang.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
The first knockout round often has some dull games in which underdogs try to play for a 0-0 draw and take their chances on penalty kicks.

We'll likely see at least a few games like that this year. Sweden and Japan might be the top candidates to use that tactic. Mexico might also use it against Brazil provided that El Tri can stay consistent and keep their composure, and Colombia might resort to a defense-heavy strategy if James Rodriguez can't play against England.

Russia is the biggest underdog but "parking the bus" is not their team style.

RE: World Cup 2018 Group Draw
The knockout stages provide some good drama. The semifinalists come from 4 quadrants.

Quadrant I - Uruguay vs Portugal; France vs Argentina

Definitely some hesitation here but all are world powers. I pick Uruguay vs France with France moving to the semis.

Quadrant II - Brazil vs Mexico; Belgium vs Japan

Mexico’s win over Germany looks far less impressive. Japan is in a world of hurt. Brazil vs Belgium with Belgium moving to the semis.

Quadrant III - Spain vs Russia; Croatia vs Denmark

Russia will likely get outclassed. Spain has not looked great by any stretch either. The other game is a good matchup but Croatia is hitting their stride perfectly. Spain vs Croatia with Croatia moving to the semis.

Quadrant IV - Sweden vs Switzerland; Colombia vs England

With players out, I don’t see Switzerland moving on even though I think their a better team. Colombia’s star, James Rodriguez, has had a lingering knee injury. I see England sneaking through. Sweden vs England with England on to the semis.

Semis: France vs Belgium; Croatia vs England

Finals: Belgium vs Croatia

1st - Belgium
2nd - Croatia
3rd - France
4th - England
