Wow! Tale of two quarters!

Final Toledo 74 - Iona 57.

Watched the replay on ESPN3, and boy what a bizarre game. Q1 looked like the same team that dominated Dayton and would easily roll to a 30+ point victory against an overmatched Iona team. Then Q2 started and it was like a switch went off. Q2 was quite possibly the poorest quarter I have ever seen a Cullop team play. Don't understand what happened, as it wasn't just one or 2 players. It wasn't just the silly turnovers. The defense kinda fell apart too. So strange.

Good news is that Boyd looked much more like her old self this game. Double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. The student announcers were just stunned at her rebounding and repeated over and over again "and she's only 5'7". Also Woody provided some nice offensive spark when the expected scorers were all having trouble. FT shooting was good again, and shot 6-11 from behind the arc.

If the team that played the 1st quarter shows up the rest of the season, UT will not lose more than a few games the rest of the way. If the Q2 team shows up, they may not win many. Fortunately I think Cullop will have most things corrected by the start of MAC play.

All in all, I’ll take this start to the season!

Due to major foul trouble with our other guards, Boyd played 39 minutes, and she played with a ton of energy. All in all, this was not a great game for the Rockets against a bad Iona team. We're lucky that Iona's best shooter was 0-8 beyond the arc.

Boyd was outstanding and Woody made several nice plays during her time in the game. Beyond that the remaining players who log big minutes were all saddled with foul trouble beginning early in the second quarter. So Santucci, McIntyre, Bravo-Harriett, St Fort, and Cunningham all sat for significant minutes in the second half.

Iona is 0-5 but also has played the 49th most difficult schedule to date. And three of the five losses were by 12 or less points. They also play 2 juniors, 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen. I suspect they will begin winning soon.
