RE: Coaching Candidates
Side note... Doug Martin has led New Mexico State to a Sun Belt Conference Championship and has taken them to a bowl eligible record for the first time in 57 yrs. Could not be any happier for him... CONGRATS!!!

RE: Coaching Candidates
Remember when people on this board basically called Doug Martin the worst coach in America?

He just took America's worst football program to a bowl-eligible season for the first time in more than half a century.

When coaches have success before and after a failed tenure at KSU, I think you can see where the problem is.

I liked Doug Martin. I liked Dean Pees. I thought both were very good coaches.

Good for Doug Martin -I am happy for him a year ago he was on the coaching hot seat - I liked him as well and thought he was a good recruiter we always seemed to get injuries at critical times during his tenure.

RE: Coaching Candidates
New Mexico St did not win the SunBelt Conference. They finished 6-6 in the middle of the pack. They were bowl eligible and will play in the Arizona Bowl. Afterwards they were voted out of the Sun Belt (they were football only) and will play as an independent next year. Idaho represented the Sun Belt in a bowl last year and they too were voted out. I guess the moral of the story is stay away from the Sun Belt Conference.

I didn’t post this to argue about Doug Martin but I thought it was interesting.

Hearing Joel and the search firm are making nice progress and there is significant interest in our opening. Hopefully it won't be too much longer.

Great job by Doug Martin breaking the bowl streak of 58 years and New Mexico State. He also played a big role in getting the 2012 team that broke our own 40 year bowl drought.

Someone above mentioned that Lee Owens of Ashland would be a nice pick. I did a little background on him and I would be very pleased if he were selected. He has great NE Ohio ties and is well respected.

RE: Coaching Candidates
No Owens for me. He was a head coach in the MAC for 9 years and firmly established his mediocrity at this level. He may have found the right level of competition—D-2—he can be successful at in Ashland. If we find someone with D-1 head coaching experience, I think we want to see more winning than 40-61 on the resume.

RE: Coaching Candidates
As I wrote before, Owens is very happy where he is and I hear he has no interest in going back to D-I. Axeme, sad to say that 40-61 (39.6%) would be better than 32 of the last 40 Kent State football seasons. I long ago gave up on Kent State ever being a consistent MAC football power, or matching basketball's success, or being what it was in the 1970's. I'm to the point where I would be happy with a .500 football program, sad to say. I'd ne happy if I knew that driving to a home game against a MAC opponent would mean, it being a home game, I had a slightly better than a 50-50 chance of seeing a win.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Here's another name - Bob Nielson, head coach at FCS South Dakota. SD plays in the Missouri Valley conference which is the Big 10 or SEC of FCS football. Interestingly, Nielson's team beat Bowling Green this year, somthing we weren't able to do! He also led the team to the 2nd round of the FCS playoffs this season. Allen Moff is saying no offer has been made at this point.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Your AD is targeting Bob Nielson, in his second year at South Dakota State (8-5, FCS playoffs this year).

Prior to SDS he was 16-21 at Western Illinois and 100-26 at Minnesota-Duluth including two national championships.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Joel Nielsen came from South Dakota prior to Kent. Does this have anything to do with his interest? No other candidates and or interest? This time of year is important for recruiting I would think. It would be good to get a guy with ties to Ohio. Or a familiar face for recruiting. Hopefully get the position filled. Again critical time to not have a leader moving forward.

Heck after 40 years of mostly terrible football why would you pass up a good candidate to rush to hire somebody with Ohio ties? Whoever you hire will be here for 5 years unless he has a super season. This years recruiting class becomes pretty unimportant in the context of finding the right coach.

RE: Coaching Candidates
looking at Bob Nielson coaching history- looks like excellent DII coach/ turned around Western Ill in 3rd year made FCS playoffs/ 2nd year at South Dakota made FCS playoffs/ 58 yrs old...maybe he would stay longer term if successfull? wonder why he went from Western Ill to South Dakota- same conference- Mo Valley- hmmm- Bo Polini coaches in that conference too- don't think he would come to Kent-as others have said- probably looking for a bigger jump...

RE: Coaching Candidates
I prefer the Head Coaching experience of a Scott Shafer to Marcus Freeman/Ed Warriner assistant head coach/ coordinators type... I think we need someone who has run all aspects of a program.
