The coaching carousel is spinning at a fast pace, and it appears it could spin Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen back to Gainseville, Florida, as the head coach of the Florida Gators.

Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated reports that the ninth-year coach at Mississippi State has become the primary target for athletic director Scott Stricklin, and the deal could be done as early as Sunday. Mullen and Stricklin worked together when Stricklin was Mississippi State's AD from 2010-16.

When asked about his future following Thursday's 31-28 loss to Ole Miss, Mullen deflected as best he could.

I think Mullen will be great there. The biggest issue with Florida the last few season has been the offense.

They have had great defenses especially the last 2 seasons prior to this one when they won the SEC East.

Inrhibk he instantly improves the offense. I also think he'll get the exact QB he needs to win.

Now the question is who does Mississippi State pull in to replace him.

They have what should be A top 25 caliber team coming back next season. How recruiting is impacted though and what kind of system the new guy runs will have an affect.

With Frost probably headed to Nebraska or staying put at UCF Mullen was the next best option in my opinion.

I would feel sorry for State fans, but then I remembered how annoying their cowbells were in St. Pete last year...

In all seriousness this is a great hire by the Gators. Mullen has consistently overachieved at a school with some of the least resources in all the SEC, he could really thrive at UF (especially if FSU struggles to recover from this season). On the flip side this is a complete disaster for Mississippi State, who risks falling back into irrelevance if they hire the wrong replacement. Whoever that is will have big shoes to fill, but a good roster and solid overall program (for now) in the most difficult division of college football.

I don't follow the SEC much, but this is perhaps the biggest offseason coming up (coaching search-wise) that I can remember. The Mississippi schools, Arkansas, and A&M are up for grabs in the West with the best of the four probably heading to the upper-half of the division standings while the worst will wind up in the basement for a while. Over in the East we might be seeing the beginning of the return of Florida, and if UT screws up this next hire they're in danger of becoming even more irrelevant than they are now. On the flip side, if Mullen works out well and UT hits a home run while some of the new coaches in the West flop, there's a chance we see a shift in power in the bottom of the conference.

Well it is expected that A&M will announce Jimbo Fisher as their next head coach at 10 AM tomorrow morning (probably central time). So Mullen will likely be coaching against a rebuilding F.S.U. who will be looking for a new coach after the cream of this year's crop has been spoken for already. So that will likely give him a nice leg up heading into next year.

There was talk a couple of months ago about A&M being interested in Franklin (PSU). I know A&M has deep pockets but I don't know if they want to get in a bidding war with a school that has equally deep pockets.

just thinking for FSU if Fisher does leave- that's going to really be an interesting coaching search. talk about a program at a crossroads.

This is a good situation for Florida.

Jimbo is a big name but his career has been on the downward roll. It’s a name for A&M but I question if it is as big as it may first appear.

The Aggies turned 194 million last year in total revenue. Florida State is nowhere in the same tier in revenue. If the Aggies wanted to toss 20 million at him they could. The question will be does Jimbo turn this down at the last minute like he did L.S.U. last year? The difference however is that L.S.U. is more constrained on cash. So we'll see.

A&M also has the benefit of being the sole Texas team in the SEC. While Louisiana is the best per capita recruiting state in the nation, the fact that it's sandwiched between Texas and the rest of the deep south makes it a natural target for other schools. A coach with Florida connections like Jimbo could thrive in College Station if he can juggle peninsula recruiting while also holding down Texas.
