RE: The Blazers Return To Bartow Sunday In Pursuit Of Consistency And Confidence
I just hope todays game wasn't too easy leading up to Memphis.

Memphis isn't the same Memphis that dominated us for a decade but they are still plenty capable of beating us by 20 on our home court if we don't come to play.

Not having Gueye could be a problem. Just because if HaHa or Coke or Sully gets in foul trouble, we will be playing with 4 guards. None of which really seem like good choices at the power forward spot. I'm not sure which guy is best to play the 4 in a bind.
Lavender or Perry ?

If I was on the Memphis coaching staff, my goal would be to hammer it inside and try to get Coke in foul trouble. Also, rough him up a bit in an attempt to get him to lose his cool. Hope he doesn't let that happen.

Two things could cause us to lose to Memphis.
1. Our players believe like the fans do that it is against the rules of humanity for UAB to beat Memphis, and play like it.

2. Tubby Smith comes out of retirement and coaches the Tigers to victory.

Today’s win was very easy. It reminded me of an exhibition game, which it was for Mississippi College but not for UAB.

I guess they could put Smallwood in there but I get the impression they would rather put an undersized guard in.

Ehsan has settled in on seven players. He needs to be using Smallwood and Gueye more often, primarily to guard in the paint and to help prevent our starting big's from getting into foul trouble.

I'm not sure I agree. Both guys have their limitations. And if you recall, Gene wasn't always keen on going 9 deep.
Putting in either of the above two guys in early in a close game probably makes us a weaker team. Could cost us points and fouls.

WKU picked up a couple of nice wins going 7 deep. Their walk on might have played a very few minutes. Not much. And its easier to get away with a walk on at the wing or point than down under.
And I consider Smallwood a walk on. And Gueye a project. Its nice to get him minutes but not if it costs us games.

I think the staff dropped the ball last year leaving 2 scholarships unfilled. (before giving one to the juco guard). We needed another big.
But, I also understand its hard to recruit when you have 2 all conference bigs who will get most of the minutes down low.

Next year, if Smallwood isn't going to be game ready, we need to take him off the roster unless he wants to pay his own way or become a manager. We cant afford to have a 4 year guy who never gets serious playing time. And I'm not sure he will even next year.

Did or has anyone actually watched Smallwood play. Even against a D2 team, he looked lost on defense. Gueye is hurt so I guess some of you think Ehsan should still play him.

Sometimes having 13 players that can ball is worse than having 11 or so.

Fortunately we don't have that problem.
