I don’t have any inside info but it seems that Currie allowed himself to be seduced by the Gruden idea and threw all his eggs into that basket. The backup would have been Mullen, but UCLA threw everything out of whack. UF’s first choice goes to Westwood, the Gators get Mullen and UT ends up SOL. In the scramble they end up in the same situation they weee in hiring Butch, desperate to have someone tell them yes. My guess is that Campbell wasn’t on the radar.

Which is odd because Currie came from a school that played Iowa State every season. You'd think he'd be familiar with any candidates in that conference and would have them on a short list.

TM is ready to become a headcoach. I wouldn't waste time on anyone else.

Neal Brown from Troy would be an interesting choice.

Either the cost of success just got a whole hell of a lot higher or it will be a few more years of somebodies best, though ineffective, effort.

Why would anyone want Kansas State's A.D.? Currie didn't have to make a major hire at K State because Snyder was/is an institution there. Tennessee needed a veteran of many tough hires as an A.D.. So yeah, the issue is systemic at Knoxville.

It’s difficult to imagine this being worse for UT right now.

It’s definately going to get worse. The only way to save it is to bring in Peyton Manning to give his blessing on whoever is hired.

You may be right. He's not quite the big name that Vols were hoping for, I'm sure, but he's got a pretty good resume and he's alumni. If he's successful then he'll stay forever.

Don't touch him. Please. He's doing well there, and I would like to see it continue. I don't think he'd do as well at UT.

Interesting developments...

Am told there's increasing pressure now from big-money #Vols boosters to force #Tennessee AD John Currie out in the wake of Sunday's news. UT source told me: "This is such a hot mess. Just when you think they’ve gotten out of the ditch. They’ve fallen into a much bigger one.”

Hearing that #USC OC Tee Martin, a #Vols legend who led UT to a national title, has a legit shot at the #Tennessee HC vacancy in the wake of yesterday’s mess.

Yeah.... if I weren't a Tennessee lifer, I wouldn't want to touch that dumpster fire. Schiano got lucky he didn't make it in.

Campbell signed an extension today with Iowa State. He's off the market this time.

According to ESPN's Chris Low, David Cutcliffe has apparently turned Tennessee down.

I don't think that's particularly surprising given where Cutcliffe is right now. I also don't think it's a particularly great loss. UT needs a younger guy who has the potential to be around for a long time.

RE: TN Coaching Search
Tennessee now looking at Jeff Brohm, Dave Doeren, and Tee Martin.

Quote:A source told SI Tuesday that UT also has reached out to Purdue’s Jeff Brohm and NC State’s Dave Doeren in hopes of filling its coaching vacancy. Gundy was able to use the Vols for some leverage. Word is Brohm and Doeren are likely more viable options, as could be USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin.

Also, Knoxville radio personality Jimmy Hyams is tweeting about potential candidates:

@JimmyHyams
5h5 hours ago

Kevin Steele is a former UT player and coach. He is currently Auburn's defensive cordinator. He has worked for 6 coaches who have won a national championship. He did not do well as Baylor's coach more than 15 years ago but he has served as DC at 4 prominent schools since then.

@JimmyHyams
5h5 hours ago

Steele has the ability to put together a strong staff that would include several former Tennessee players and/or coaches. He is also regarded as an outstanding recruiter who landed running back Chuck Webb for Tennessee in 1988. He signed Tommie Frazier for Nebraska in the 1990s

Tennessee coaching search might be focused on SMU coach Chad Morris who was believed to have been interviewed by Tennessee while in Dallas to also interview Mike Gundy

------------------

Lots of info swirling here, but the article above did state Chad Morris was not going to interview on Wed. Of course, I guess that doesn't technically rule him out of having been interviewed early today or at some point in the future.

TN fans are being blasted in the media right now, so I'll just note my own personal opinion: Brohm may be a great coach. I'm not sure how to view his time at WKU because he came after Petrino, but he can develop quarterbacks, it seems. I'll support him and give him a chance to prove himself. Probably the best we could do, though I am disappointed in the coaching search overall because it doesn't seem Currie and others involved really contemplated every possible option.

That being said, I don't like stealing a coach who has been at his current school 1 year. We are doing to Purdue what USC did to us with Kiffin (assuming this is true. Nothing is gauranteed until the contract is signed).

Maybe we can offer a H-H series with them as part of the bye out?

Yeah, I was a little surprised it was Brohm because he just finished his first year. I think all Tennessee folks have a right to be pissed at Currie. I think a home and home with Purdue is mixed bag under these circumstances. Folks in Indiana might feel as betrayed as Vols fans did with Kiffin.

Apparently it was fake news anyway. I think TN is a great place to coach, with lots of money and great facilities, and a winnable division, but dang if at this point I wouldn't want to work for this administration. I'm just hoping we can get a coach. Give interim Brady Hoke a chance but put a stop to this mess.

Yep, there are stories now circulating refuting the announcement on the Knoxville radio station that broke the announcement. So right now there is nothing concrete on this matter.

But in truth hiring Vanderbilt's head coach to serve at Tennessee is essentially the comparison to Purdue. Why not Northwestern? They've been consistently better than Purdue for quite some time now.

Clay Travis rumor: Deal was done, chancellor wouldn't sign it, Currie had to go back and ask Brohm to take less money, he said no.

Clay Travis should be sued for his part in stirring the backlash against Schiano. I think both Schiano and Tennessee should sue him. If someone at UT is leaking information to this putz then they need to be relieved of their duties, or if they merely have a source within the athletic department then that employee should be fired.

There's your problem at Tennessee!!!! Clay Travis should never know what the heck you are about to do or what you just attempted to do!

And an important side note: Once Tennessee had a source saying they were willing to give John Gruden 10 million a year and another 8 million for his staff do you seriously think any of these good coaches are going to come for less??? Does Tennessee think someone else is going to take less than Brohm was offered??? This is a huge dysfunctional crap storm that is blowing up in Knoxville and it screams for a housecleaning!!!
