Has nothing to do with Big West.

UC San Diego is a future member of the Big West Conference...Big West member in 2020...

UC San Diego is on a par in enrollment with UC Davis, UC Irvine, & CSU Long Beach (Long Beach St)...all Big West members...

UC San Diego is in the top 5 in enrollment compared to the rest of the BWC...

UC San Diego wants to grow to 40K+ enrollment in the near future...which will make it one of the largest universities in the BWC...

With a record of applications for fall (2019) enrollment feeds into UC San Diego's growth and development...

I grew up in SD and UCSD has always been a destination university for 1) top tier academics, 2) being right on the beach, and 3) being in an awesome city.

BW membership has nothing to do with UCSD being in high demand by college applicants.

(02-02-2019 03:23 AM)jdgaucho Wrote:  A recent interview with Commissioner Dennis Farrell. Looks like CSUB is obligated to do something after all.

http://fullertontitans.com/general/2018-...01BTU2HnAM

As the television networks encounter shrinking subscriber bases and Power Five football conference schools are concerned about potentially smaller TV deals, Farrell said the Big West is well positioned to succeed in an evolving media market.

"The potential decline would affect the Power 5 conferences far more than programs at our level. Right now, we aren't making a lot of money on television," said Farrell. "What the future holds for conferences like ours is much greater exposure on the digital front. The capacity for getting our content out there to the public is far greater today and at far less cost than it's ever been."

To illustrate that point, Farrell pointed out that both UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield are required to develop on-campus digital production capabilities to produce ESPN 3-quality content as part of their Big West admittance.

"Hopefully, that's the model that all of our schools will be going to," he said. "They can produce an unlimited number of games digitally that will help coaches with recruiting and allow family and friends to watch from anywhere in the world."

"I'm excited about the digital future of media, whether it is with ESPN, Amazon, Facebook Live or Google," said Farrell. "We have a contract with ESPN to 2023. But 2023 will be here before we know it. And we don't know what the world will look like then. [Digital production] gives us the ability to possibly shop around to other content providers."

Also dropped a line about possible future expansion

--Conference expansion. "We're not in a rush to go to 12 members. We've had division alignments before, and they can lead to some polarization among members. There are really two reasons conferences expand -- for survival or opportunity. Fortunately, we are in a position that we're going to be able to look at any future candidates for membership and ask, 'Does this present an opportunity for us to get better?' "

What isn't clear is if any future candidates can be outside California. Not ruled out though.

Those capabilities are pretty standard for D1 programs. I'm surprised Bako wasn't up to snuff yet.

RE: Report: UCSD Finally Gets Big West Invite
I love the way they talk about spikes in applicants. UC system has been encouraging HS students to apply to multiple campus and more students to apply.

So they take any more students as a result of this? No, of course not the system is fully impacted, no more seats to be had, and a minimum of 15% of the seats are reserved for foreign students (they pay full ride, and it covers a portion of the budget without state funding which is maxed out). But every application brings another $70 to the UC system. Increase applications 100,000 and you increase the revenue $6M without adding a single student or a single class. Those students who are sure to get in applying to a 2nd, 3rd and 4th campus bring an extra $180 without impacting anything.

I am amazed the article writers are so ignorant of the strategy. Every HS counselor in the state understand that.

It's not just foreign students. It's also American students from outside California.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristenmoon...d3b29a527b

UCLA, for example, admitted only 12% of its California applicants while admitting 22% of its out-of-state applicants. UC in San Diego admitted 51% of its out-of-state applicants compared to the 26% of California residents who applied that were granted admission.

Wonder if UCSD will start admitting more athletes from outside California.

C'mon, it's nothing new. They've been encouraging students to apply to multiple UC campuses since at least the 1980s. The application fee hasn't even gone up that much -- it's $70 now, I think it was $60 back then. And if the UC system actually calculated how much employee time it takes from receiving each application, to processing it, to notifying each applicant of the decision, to sending out materials to admitted applicants, to sending out more stuff to applicants who accept and then processing what they send back, it would be far more than $70 per application. But students and families would be outraged if universities set application fees high enough to match the average cost of processing an application.

You know everything is subsidized in California. They'll never do costs.

What I was trying to explain is the total number of applicants to the UC system is not much changed, but the number of applicants per school has gone up as a result of the duplicates. It's a game going on, where the extra money is pocketed.

Actually most of the application process is automated, by zip code, GPA and SAT. Do not think for a minute each of those is actually read in depth, only those that need be, near the cut lines for programs or schools. That number is not increasing. So there is really very little cost increase, but there is a huge revenue increase.

It would be far easier and cheaper for applicants if the form allowed them to select four campuses, ranking them 1 to 4, and then do a single processing letting them know the majors/schools they would be accepted to. That is a simple form change and you could drop the extra processing fee in half easily, and simplify it with a single application.

You are still underestimating the cost of processing applications. The Cal State system recently proposed increasing its application cost to the same $70, and said that they will still be losing money at that rate, just losing less money than they are losing now. The extra money will "help offset" the cost of processing applications, it won't cover it completely.

Quote:A $70 per campus application fee would match that of the 10-campus University of California system and many other universities, public and private, around the country, officials said. The $15 increase in each application fee is estimated to produce about $7 million in additional revenue to run the application portal and help offset admissions review costs. Officials said that those programs are operating at a loss since revenue has not gone up in three decades and that other university funds are subsidizing them.

They do pretty well in both of those sports in D-II. We'll have to see how well their coaches recruit for D-I when they get there.

UCSD strikes me as a school that really has their act together. I predict that within five years their athletic program will be one of the top two or three in the Big West. I also expect a UCSD-Hawaii rivalry to emerge and I think it’s gonna be fun.

If UCSD has their act together, they can make some headway in landing quality talent. But it's not just the other BW members who should be concerned about further dilution of in-state talent for recruits. Those concerns will also apply to Fresno State, SJSU and especially San Diego State (the last case mainly for olympic sports). The Aztecs athletic director will never publicly say it, but I suspect the last thing he wants is to have another Division 1 institution in his backyard. Especially one who will be able to compete at a high level.

Nonetheless, it's still a sad drop from the acme of a generation ago. In 1990, the Big West and UNLV celebrated a national championship in basketball. In 2020, it will be celebrating some Roadrunners and potentially the start of a UCSD-Hawaii rivalry.

At least USD hasn't tried making the jump to FBS and UCSD won't field a football team ever again.

For everything else, I don't think UCSD will have issues landing talent. Basketball and Baseball have been doing very well, so it'll be exciting if the Tritons can continue attract talented players at this level.
