This could be the end of the WAC if it’s Bakersfield.

I've heard nothing to indicate that anyone else is being added or that UC Davis is leaving. I think this is just about rounding out the conference membership at 10 with a school that fits the Big West institutionally, has been a strong performer at the D-2 level, and gives the conference a presence in another major market.

This is my take from this. Surprised the CSU's gave up their voting block with this move. I figured they would require a CSU to be brought in with UCSD to keep the voting numbers even.

Sac State isn't leaving the BSC unless we have a long term home for FB. And the BW isn't going to sponsor FB so the BSC-BWC cross over talk is DavidSt type of ridiculousness. It should stop.

No brainer move by the BW to add UCSD...however they can kiss any hope of an at-large berth good-bye. (BW fans, take solace in the fact that you guys were never going to get an at-large anyways.)

Not sure why anyone is thinking FBS for them when they couldn't even draw 7k to a game coming in with a 2 game win streak against the BSC leader in the standings and a passing attack that was atop all of FCS.

RE: Report: UCSD Finally Gets Big West Invite
Well UC Davis had a Chinese Communist Party cell and so far no professors involved expelled, deported or anything else. They have a major leadership problem in Chancellors office
http://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-...university

The cell was made up of "a group of visiting Chinese scholars in the United States have dissolved a Chinese Communist Party cell they set up at the University of California, Davis, citing fears about violating US laws.

The scholars – six party members and one probationary member – raised eyebrows over the weekend after they were reported to have founded a party branch at the university earlier this month."

There are also students who participated. All are of course are in violation of visa and should be deported. But nothing has happened. And congress and the President are silent. There are certainly 50 or 100 such illegal cells at US Universities, which constitutes obvious espionage and security problems and intimidation of Americans of families with ties to China. Silence.

An administration at UC Davis that is so afraid of losing Chinese money that cannot make a move even when outed, lacks the ability to make any strong decisions for the school.

The potential of UC Davis is enormous, but it has perhaps the weakest an worst administration of any California public University (and that is saying something). So for that reason I agree with SDHornet.

It sounds like six people founded a club less than a month ago and dissolved it immediately when they were notified they hadn't filed the required paperwork with the DOJ. Sounds a lot like trying to make something out of nothing.

RE: Report: UCSD Finally Gets Big West Invite
No it's much deeper than that. There are Communist Party cells on most top US Campuses. This is the way the CCP works. They use it to gather information on PRC Nationals overseas and to grease the paths of members back in China for prime jobs

This one was only found out because a mainland newspaper had a story about it, not thinking they were exposing something. Sheer ignorance. When the SCMP ran the story in HK they realized the mistake and pulled all record of the report and the group hastily claimed it disbanded. But make no mistake there are such cells at UCLA, UCSD, Cal, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Harvard and elsewhere.

China not Russia is our biggest security problem. Unlike Rusia which has only a little more than 1/3rd the US population and less than 10% of the US GDP (consumer more like 5%), China actually just passed the US GDP. (American view of power in the world is still stuck in 1975)

It sounds like there's nothing inherently illegal with this, provided you register your organization with the DOJ, and upon being notified they'd established incorrectly they disbanded after being a thing for all of two weeks. Not sure what you want the administration at UC Davis to do given that they appear to have attempted to comply with the law. If this is about a nationwide spy ring that isn't being broken up your beef is with Jeff Sessions.

That being said, I don't understand why you're making this the basis for agreeing that UC Davis should stay at the FCS level (and they should, btw - that MW invite isn't coming).

I agree, but not sure why that is relevant as we are not talking about BSC at-large pie in the sky dreams.

Question about the Big West announcement for any rules geeks who might know the answer:

Quote:UC San Diego will begin an NCAA mandated four-year reclassification period to Division I on July 1, 2020.

Why wait until 2020 to begin the reclassification period? Why not start it in July 2018?

Probably a two-fold deal.
1. CSU-B being nice to the WAC for providing a home for them and giving them time to find another school to move up.

2. Gives UC-SD time to make preparations for the move such as giving a couple of years to prepared for the increase in costs with the move to D1.

I think UCSD had already had a few years to prepared to go D1. If they move up in 2018? They could be eligible in 2021 for post season.

Yep, like I thought.

I don't think the fees kicked in until an invite was had. Now that they have it, fees can start.

I like this move for the Big West. I would have rather seen Sacramento St be the Cal St school involved.

UCSD isn't the problem. It's Bakersfield. I know I'm not the only one disgusted with how this went down 03-puke

probably because bsc has sac state on lockdown...ideally sac state would go to the bwc non-football...bsc football only...

unfortunately csub was the only csu available to keep the balance in the bwc between the uc's & csu's...not an ideal scenario...invite through association...

the bwc was more interested in keeping the peace between the uc's & csu's than evaluating by what a school brings to the table...

the bsc just wants to hoard western schools to hurt or possibly get rid of the wac...

exactly. after being oh so close to getting boise and sdsu back in 2013- and improving its profile as a conference - the bw got lazy and settled for ucsd and csub without receiving any concessions or promises. there is no benefit to bringing in csub, who wasn't even wanted for the longest time, and now that slams the door on ever getting back any former members.
