Who do you think is recruiting these kids? 01-wingedeagle

I mean, we could buy them new cars or pay the parents large sums of money I guess.

ODU had one bad recruiting year in 2015. We lost some valuable commits who changed their minds at the last minute. Wilder had to replace those losses with low level talent. ODU is currently 5th in CUSA recruiting per 24/7 sports.

Unless we upgrade our facilities, we become vulnerable to other programs who can flip our recruits by touting their facilities.

An FBS quality stadium, player lounge or indoor facility would be nice. It's hard to close the deal without them.

There are a lot of factors that go into the decision making process. Former FSU QB and crab leg lover, Jameis Winston chose the Seminoles because he thought the cheerleaders where hot.

Nagy isn't going anywhere.

Good luck.

Not arguing against upgrading facilities, but an indoor practice facility hardly seems necessary as we don't have the extreme heat as some of our conferencemates in FL and TX. If such a facility were deemed necessary I don't know where on campus it could fit, or how we would go about paying for it while funding a new stadium.

Programs in warmer climates are constructing these facilities. It doesn't matter what we think is necessary, it's about the recruit who thinks having an indoor facility is a factor in his decision.

True, but don't hold your breath in ODU building an indoor facility within the next 2 decades regardless of coaching or administrative staffs.

This must happen. How many games are we going to lose because of Nagy at the head of the defense?

I have watched too many easy scores, soft coverages and missed tackles. This man couldn’t coach a middle school defense let alone an FBS one.

Fire Nagy.

Unwillingness to do anything different = time for a change.

When your "strength" is the DE's, why are we allowing QB's to make quick passes by playing 7-10 yards off the receivers?

We are very slow in the backend of the defense. We have to get faster on defense. That being said, this doesn’t excuse fifth year seniors being out of position every game. Way too many miscues for guys Nagy has coached their entire time at ODU. The combination of these two issues are why the defense has been nonexistent every game this season.

FAU put more total yards on us, 605, than it did on MEAC school Bethune Cookman.
The Owls scored more points on us as well.

I’m sure the usual suspects probably want to give him a life long contract though lol.

RE: Fire Rich Nagy
The numbers are the numbers.

We are averaging 34.3 points per game since starting LaRussa vs 18.3 before.
Further that 34.3 ppg is against arguably far better competition.
Although I am in no way satisfied with our running scheme, or it's production, almost 35 points per game is competitive in this league.

Opponents are averaging 41.3 ppg against us for the last three games (38.7 for the season).
That is untenable.
Unless something changes on the defense, we will beat only VMI, and likely Rice going forward.

In CUSA only Rice and FAU (ugh) are statistically worse (opp scoring) than we are. FAU is excused because it has played Oklahoma and UCF. Unfortunately for us, VT appears to have been somewhat of a paper tiger.

Opp Yards/Play 6.5
Opp Points/Play 0.478
Opp Completion % 61.50%
Opp 3D Conv % 42.70%
Opp RZ Scoring % 83.33%

I defended Nagy back when this thread was started but not so much in 2018.

On the radio, Andy Mashaw was questioning the defensive scheme from the start.

ODUalum78 gives a good example, weaker teams doing better against like opponents.

We need to do something about our defense.

Oklahoma fired Stoops after their loss to UT. Big Boys don’t play around. Do your job and do it well every game or you are gone !

I have said that BW should be fired. I have backed off (for now) because of the VT win. Rich Nagy on the other hand has been terrible. Oklahoma fired their D-Coordinator after 1 loss, Rich Nagy needed to be fired years ago. ODU's lack of action on this matter is very concerning. I think we have some talent on defense but they are constantly making mistakes and out of position. Nagy has lost control and you could argue that he never had control of this defense.

Mike Stoops was getting paid $300k more than CBW and will likely go to another P5. I wouldn't be surprised if he joined his brother Mark at UK.

We don't need Stoops, just anyone other than Rich Nagy. This defense has been a joke under him for years.

When we are cringing on every 3rd and 12. The defensive coordinator needs to be fired.

RE: Fire Rich Nagy
I just get frustrated with his lack of attempts to change things. We have not had a great defense over his tenure, but it has slowly improved every year and this year should have been the year to have a rock solid defense. Experience all over the play except at LB, but both are quick and talented. I understand we may not want to blitz as much because we have a strong front 4 that can get after the QB.

But, we still have never been able to reliably stop the running game and that puts that much pressure on the rest of the defense. The lanes are wide open underneath because our LBers have to commit to the run.

I don't remember a corner or safety blitz. I dont remember a whole lot of disguising coverages to confuse the opponent. Even when you play zone off the ball (cover 3 a lot), when you see the QB making the throw, you have to attack the pass catcher, we seem to let them catch the ball and then play back on our heels.

The bend but break style works if you can stop teams in the red zone and/or create turnovers. We don't do either.

I will say, I am not surprised at all when teams get first downs on 3rd and 10 against us. I don't know why anyone would punt against us.

That's a lot of yards ..... unfortunately our defense appears to be a welcome mat for opposing offenses to clean themselves on. With numbers like that you are not going to win. It takes an extraordinary offensive push to overcome numbers like that. Throw in some 'dufus' special teams play and there you have it 1- 5. If someone had told me that we would be 1 - 5 at the halfway point, I'd have laughed. I thought we would at least be 3-3 at worst case. We have substantially exceeded my 'worst case' predictions. I've noticed that our defense oftentimes seems: (1) confused, (2) slow to get set, (3) frequent missing assignments and blown coverage in the secondary, (4) too many arm tackles, (5) slow in pursuit, and (6) exhausted with hands on hips. early in the game. Pinch me, am I imaging these??

We are not playing as a unit. Zero consistency. Cant get off the field. Missed tackles. You name it.

There is no salvaging Nagy at this point. If we win it will be because of our new offense. Which is actually playing pretty well. The defense is just SOOOOO bad its not even funny.

FIRE NAGY NOW!

I hadn't really noticed before, and maybe it was because I was flipping back and forth between our game and the Miami vs FSU game, but our defense looked incredibly slow.

It's a result of the defensive mentality at ODU.

Miami places a lot of importance on turnovers and big plays. Whereas we preach "don't end up on the wrong side of a highlight" er no penalties and no big plays. That conservative mentality does not lead to guys playing fast.
