RE: What are the odds this is Clark’s last game at Legion Field
I don’t want to be a downer but a 1 million dollar buyout will not keep anschool willing to pay a ten million buyout to pay a coach to go away.

Coach Clark is now vested in the State of AL's teacher retirement system, so that is a non-issue now. Still, I expect him to stay at UAB. However, there may be a day when he gets an offer he can't refuse. But, I could see him staying here like Gary Patterson did at TCU.
He could stamp a legacy upon our program that would far outweigh any legacy he could stamp somewhere else. We have to wonder what his priorities are. I don't think they are the same as most coaches. If they were, he would have taken off in 2014!
He is a special person, and I'm glad he is a Blazer!

I doubt he's on the radar of any school with that kind of money yet

He may be vested, but if he left today his pension benefit would be based on the highest three years out of the last 10 years. He would not get credit for his new increased salary. If he's really playing the retirement game, he'll be at UAB for 2-3 more years.
There will be a day that he leaves, that is for sure. Even The One in Tuscaloosa will leave, eventually. He may have it in his head that he wants to stick it out to hit X, Y, or Z goals but in the end you have to recognize that this is a job for him and it's a career. At the end of the day he's going to do what is best for himself.

It's true about his highest three years, but he has pushed past his old lower salaries. His highest three now are in the $600,000 range. Sure, the $1 million salary will bump it even more, but any step up from UAB would be a MUCH higher salary now, and so worrying about AL retirement becomes much less of a concern than before.

RE: What are the odds this is Clark’s last game at Legion Field
FBHC Clark's tenure at UAB has put him in touch with very influential people that he did not get to know at USA or Jax State. Like other well paid coaches, he has investment opportunities that likely will far outperform his TRS income. These are the kinds of factors that may sway him to stay at UAB for several years -- until that "dream job" that pays millions comes along (see Chip Kelly and his 5 year $23 million deal at UCLA). BTW, $4 million per year is not in the Top 10 of pay for university coaches now.
Since I had only my salary from the B'ham City System to count on my TRS, I don't know how much of the total salary of FBHCs counts for TRS income. Of Clark's $600,000 (to use the given figure) how much is from UAB and how much from "extra income opportunities" that may not count for TRS pension determination?

For those who don't really have a grasp of the Teachers Retirement System payout formula, it is #years of service X 2% of average of 3 highest years' salary over the past 10 years of service in the System. So, for example, if he has 7 years and thats it,, when he reaches full retirement age he would get 14% of ( assuming this is his average, $600K) / year = $84 K / year. From that would be deducted his health insurance and taxes, if applicable. Nothing to sneeze at, but he wont feel like he won the lottery either, especially if you factor in about 2 more decades of inflation before he can start to collect. The big attraction of the retirement system is if one actually puts in 25-30 years of service, then the retirement benefit can be pretty significant.

He has been coaching in Alabama all but 1-2 years since 1990. So he has 25 years already.

You guys do know he's out recruiting this week....for UAB,right?. You know the school that just built him 24 million in facilities? That just redid his contract to make him one of the highest paid coaches in the conference? Where he stuck around while the president was telling everyone football was "dead and gone"?
Give the guy a little credit for loyalty here

RE: What are the odds this is Clark’s last game at Legion Field
I give him a ton of credit. I really don't think that he has any intention of going anywhere in the near term. I also don't think that he yet has the kind of resume that warrants tens of millions being thrown around. We know that he's worth it, but the kind of jobs that pay that sort of money also have pressures surrounding it. Look at what happened at UT this weekend.
My guess is that we'll have him for some years yet. He's done a great job building and deserves to enjoy the payoff for that work. He wants to build UAB into a mid-major power, and he is off to a good start on that. Get him that stadium and watch him go.
That said, it is a job and a career for him, and the time will come when he is offered a job that meets or exceeds what it will take to get him to leave UAB. That's the nature of his career. We need to support and enjoy him while he is here, and pray that he stays a long time.

As I asked what part of that $600,000 is from UAB as payroll - the part that will count to the TRS? Many top high school coaches make over $100,000 per year while academic classroom teachers usually average making about $40,000 to $50,000 per year (depending on longevity, degree held and wealth of their employment system).

And while Tennessee has to hire *someone*, the mess last weekend will send a lot of possibles running the other way.
I would recommend that UT hire ADMI away from us, but he'd just outsource a hiring firm.

I find it funny when Tennessee fans mention Mark for their AD position.
Knock yourselves out.

If UTK did hire ADMI away from UAB, who would be in charge of hiring his replacement?
BTW, Texas A&M is looking to hire a new FBHC too.

I imagine he has.
It is our responsibility to make sure that the program is progressing & being supported enough to keep him happy.
