We used to think Graham was the outlier QB who didn't really fit our system but it's actually Santa. He is basically a pro style QB while the others are dual threat. It's hard to mix those styles. Santa could help himself immensely by starting to run the ball. Graham wasn't a great runner at first but he's actually gotten pretty good at it.

I will be completely shocked if Santa ever plays another down here. He’s gone in the offseason.
bummer. I notice they don't call as many running plays for him as Childers or Graham, but is he slow or is it he doesn't like to run?

Pretty sure he would do whatever was asked of him to earn playing time.

I liked this quote.

"When you find yourself stuck with a coach who is good but not good enough, the problem often isn’t him. It’s infrastructure. It’s history. It’s program support."

Maybe its not economically feasible to fire Carey, should he be if the financial resources were available, most likely yes, but I realize the practicality of the situation. Its on Frazier now, and I think and hope he will have some heart to hearts with Carey in the offseason. The offensive situation with this team cannot go on any longer, it just can't. I don't know if it involves a restructuring of duties, but Carey has to be as divorced from this offense as much as humanly possible, much like Iowa did when they brought in Davis.

And NIU loses out on some recruits, especially at QB, because of things like infrastructure, history, and program support.

Well the Huskies have created their own monster in this regard, all a recruit has to do is look at the extreme chaos surrounding this program in that respect right now. I never will blame a kid who plays QB for not coming to NIU right now

You got it all wrong. I think Carey should take over play calling. The offense was #13 in the nation in scoring and #20 in total offense the year Carey was OC.

LESS than THREE a season. They were an NIU field goal miss away—an overtime away—from playing in the Orange Bowl. Since that night, Kent State is 14-45......and we have people complaining or overreacting to my gosh, not playing in a bowl once in that span.....living in “mediocrity”......

Things can be a heck of a lot worse......thanks 7 for trying to bring some sanity to the status of our football program. I appreciate the neutral, accurate depiction of what and where we are.

I don't know, Milwaukee, calling Seven "neutral" is a bit of a reach. He sees things through his glasses and anyone who has a differing opinion is labeled an idiot or a moron. He, and you, are certainly entitled to whatever opinions you choose to have, however there is no one on this board who has waved the Coach Carey flag as hard and as long as Seven has.

That 2012 Kent State team was a complete fluke. Kent State is a historically bad program - they hadn't won seven games in a season since 1987. The last time they finished over .500 (6-5) was 2001. They simply reverted back to what they are. You can't compare NIU to Kent State. We positioned ourselves to be a mid-major power with a decade of success, by and large.

Yes, things could be worse. Coach Carey and his staff have done a good job recruiting on defense. For a mid-major, we have a stout defense, not many schools of our ilk can say that.

However, it was my hope, and I would like to think many NIU fans hope, that we could remain a mid-major national power year in and year out. That is not to say we would attain the access bowl every season, but that was my goal of what we should shoot for.

For me, finishing 8-4 and not even winning the MAC isn't good enough. It's okay, but I didn't play to just be okay. What player ever did? I don't root for my teams to just be okay. Do you, Milwaukee?

A Rod Carey coached team will never be in contention for an access bowl ever again because of the high school offense we run. We can't beat good teams playing like this. We can beat and even dominate lesser MAC teams with a conservative offense and a shut down defense. It's great if you want to stick it to Ball State.

So am I "delusional" for wanting Coach Carey out and taking my chances on a new coach with new ideas and new perspectives? Perhaps, but I don't think it's delusional to hope our program can get back to being viewed as a national mid-major power. We will never be able to do that without an offense.

lol, ok . Maybe Jordan Lynch had something to do with that? I swear on my grave if there was no such thing as having to answer to media or being scrutinized, Carey would punt on 3rd down, I really believe that.

So when the team is good it's because of the QB, but when the team is less good it's the coaches fault?

I see what you're saying. If the Huskies had a good QB they would be better, but they don't have a good QB. At least we both agree, Childers does not make the team good.

I realize a coach is not a magic maker, but I do think its the coaches job to put players in optimal positions to succeed. One thing you can say definitively about Carey is not only does he not do that, but he optimizes chances of failure.

He did choose to play a QB who proved over and over again that he simply cannot throw the ball while benching a QB that had demonstrated ability in the passing game.

Both kids needed additional playing time and coaching but he chose the guy with a more limited upside so he could play it safe. It cost him and the team.

why would any coach consciously choose to NOT put your best position player on the field ?
