Blazer Almanac 11/24. Happy Birthday UAB and Zack Bryant.
November 24
First up today is Blazer Birthdays
**Happy Birthday UAB. On this date in 1978, Blazer basketball played its very first game against Nebraska. More about that below.

Today is also the birthday of one of our newest basketball players. Born today in 1997 is Zack Bryant.

Also born today in 1982 is Jeffrey Collins. Collins played for UAB from 2001 to 2003 and came to UAB from Ramsay High School in Birmingham. He was dismissed from the team in Mike Anderson's first year for a team rule violation and finished his career at South Alabama. He is now the JV coach at Huffman High School.

Happy Birthday to UAB, Zack and Jeff.

UAB football:
Football has only played two games on this date and is 0-2.
2007 - UAB traveled to Marshall and lost 49-36.

2012 - UAB traveled to Central Florida and lost 49-24.

UAB Basketball:
The Basketball Blazers are 7-5 on the anniversary of their first game.

1978 - where it all began. On this date in 1978, UAB hosted Nebraska at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. Gene Bartow had been hired in 6/1977 and had built a team from scratch using freshmen, transfers and his connections to Memphis.

The first opponent, Nebraska had finished second in the Big 8 the previous year and had most of their team back. Some Preseason rankings had them Top 20. They agreed to play UAB home and home. On this date in 1978, 14,800 new Blazer fans showed up for the debut. The game was considered a sellout because McDonalds bought the remaining 2000 unsold tickets. Governor George Wallace and Mayor David Vann were present at the game.

The first shot for UAB was a Miss by Oliver Robinson at the 18:47 point. The first points were by Stan Scales at 18:06. First Free throw was by Robinson, a miss. George Jones, who was the first substitution at 11:12, made the first free throw. Stan Scales was the first to foul out.

UAB never led, but played well in their first game. They lost 64-55. Leading scorer for the Blazers was George Jones with 14 points. Since that game, UAB has played 1263 games and won 782 of them.

1984 - UAB won the second round of the Great Alaskan Shootout by beating Illinois, ranked 2nd in the most recent AP poll.

RE: Blazer Almanac 11/24. Happy Birthday UAB and Zack Bryant.
I was there on November 24th, 1978. I remember Carl McPipe, Andre Smith, and Brian Banks were three seasoned Junior and Senior Nebraska players who came in and wreaked havoc on UAB that day.

Also the Great Alaska Shootout when they beat Illinois and advanced to the Finals against Kansas. Kansas had a big heavy seven foot one and three hundred pounder named Greg Dreiling. He was huge. Archie Johnson had to guard him, Archie and Greg got in to it and somebody got ejected, I don't remember exactly what happened. Do you? Anyway, UAB won and came home with five hundred people at the Birmingham Airport to greet them.
