Question for next go ‘round, and I’m gonna take a sec to set this one up on the tee...

I know all that football talk made Michael’s heart and head hurt, but it has once again intrigued me. The conference “blow up” question spoke to how UNCW should be part of a conference that doesn’t have split loyalties with football. Why does UNCW avoid a football program. The student body has nearly doubled (I think) since I graduated in ‘06. The campus is huge in comparison now. The land isn’t a problem. Recruiting in NC wouldn’t be a problem. Startup cost would be. Travel, etc. is it time for UNCW to seriously weigh the pros and cons of starting a football team, instead of just dismissing the idea.

There are plenty of schools that have started programs in the last decade and been relatively successful. Not to mention the draw for alumni and just more general excitement and future alumni/donors for the school and Athletic Dept.

FCS football is by and large a money pit.

Sure, in a lot of places. Think about what makes our basketball attendance so strong in the community though. Partly because we’re the only D1 show unless you wanna drive a couple hours. Plus the growing student population could more easily support it. I’m just saying the old reasons for not doing it are dwindling due to growth. Can’t hurt to at least discuss.

It would definitely be cool of we could build a program with JMU or App St like success. No argument from me there. I'm just skeptical that is a realistic possibility

It’s definitely not a possibility if never attempted. You don’t make shots you never take.

I view such an achievement as like winning the lottery.

I don't buy lottery tickets, especially expensive scratch offs

Yep. I won't support even the preliminary investments into football while Baseball still remains not fully funded.

Another great discussion we'll tackle in Episode 95.

But before that, dropping this a bit last minute - tonight we're sitting down with Randy Hood and Matt Myers to record the 2019 Baseball Bonanza. So, if you've got questions about baseball season, send them in now.

If UNCW were to repeat as champs, what would they say the most important thing is that would have to happen?

Given in ILM, even on a weekend in the winter, UNCW basketball is pretty much the only game in town. Downtown except for a couple streets is quiet at night, then you have those breweries. It’s the biggest thing for several counties around. Maybe the beaches on a warm winter day.

Charleston has minor league hockey, major concerts at North Charleston Coliseum, dozens of miles of beaches, Citadel/Charleston Southern, going out to eat/nightlife, plus many folks who don’t have the disposable income till later in the year as they spend it on going to Columbia or Clemson.

UNCW football, even at the FCS level would be big for that area.

I don't think anyone debates it might be ok. But an already strapped AD doesn't have nearly the money to get it off the ground.

RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
UNCW is not going to pursue football. Why? Let me count the ways

1. Start up costs - prohibitive
2. Location - Ocean to the east, SC border to the south with CCU right on the border, literally deserted woods to the west, and the only decent sized city near UNCW is Jacksonville, and Jacksonville is filled with folks whose allegiance is to teams outside the state of NC. ECU has a solid fan base in Jacksonville and eastern NC that we'd have an impossible task of challenging. We're also a 2 hour trip to Raleigh and 4 hours to Charlotte. Which means the city of Wilmington would have to provide the bulk of fans and Wilmington isn't a "big" city, nor is there a big surrounding metropolitan.
3. Title IX - Which men's sports are we going to chop and which women's sports would we add to meet the requirements?
4. Travel budget for football
5. Student fees? we're already pretty high in the state without football. How high are we willing to raise them to have a team?
6. Stadium? Sure we can use Legion for awhile, ,but it's pretty far from campus and therefore a problem fo students to attend? Where would we put a football stadium unless our permanent solution is Legion stadium?
7. Declining attendance and concussions. Like it or not, football is dying a slow death. Lawsuits and a general move away from the sport of the younger generation are trending in the wrong direction.

Of course there are some positives, and it would be fun. But the negatives far outweigh the positives for a school that has never had a program and would have to start from scratch

Men's basketball question:

Defense. The last two games UNCW has given up a significantly less amount of points to the opponents, albeit still in losses. The opponent shooting percentages are still higher than we'd like, which leads me to believe McGrath was purposefully slowing the game down b/c of injuries at the PG position to not over work our guys. Is there something else you all saw that may lend to the fact our defense is improving or was it just a matter of slowing the game down?

If anyone has any questions, we'll certainly take them. Although this final show has the potential to be really long already.

Not a question, but just wanted to let you know how much we appreciated all you did covering the Seahawks and it sucks for Michael... trying to find a replacement for ya.
