Kent State vs. SE Louisiana
Tonight the Flashes continue play in the Savannah Classic as they welcome the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana to the MAC Center for a 7PM tip. SE La enters with a 1-3 record and is coming off an 80-53 loss to Valpo.

The Lions seem to be paced by a pair of guards in 6'3 senior Eddie Polanco, who scored 23 against ULM, and 5'9 junior Marlian Veal, who put up 26 in their loss to Tulane. Junior wing Keith Charleston(6'8), forward Moses Greenwood (6'7) and forward Jordan Capps (6'7) have also provided SE La quality minutes so far this season.

This one looks like just another tune up for what could be an exciting weekend of basketball in Savannah. So far the returns from the fans have been positive, as they should when the team is winning. Lets see if De La Rosa can continue his hot start and if the Flashes continue to get quality minutes off the bench from Ridenour, Zabo and Frederick.

Kent State 78
SE Louisiana 67
Flashes put it in cruise control for the final 8 minutes.

I think I am going to enjoy watching a winning men's BBall program that continues to "reload" no matter who is in the coaches seat!! "Excellence in Action"...

Interesting MAC score. BG 109, Lake Erie College 106. A bit closer then I would anticipate.

At this point (4:00 to go) it looks like the Flashes need lots of work to reach their potential. I hope it doesn't take as long as it did last year.

RE: Kent State vs. SE Louisiana
Defending the three turned out to be big tonight. Too much Eddy Polanco down the stretch. Yep, THE Eddy Polanco from Southeast Louisiana. Ah well, it’s a marathon. But losses like this separate the i ain’t wasting my money types from the what do you want types.

No defense of note in the second half. I had put this one in the win column. Apparently the team did also.

I think it was probably just a bad night. Those first three games probably spoiled them. We'll know soon enough. Realistically, since the MAC is a one-bid league, all the non-MAC games are just preparation for the MAC season. If they had breezed through the game, it would have been difficult for the coaches to make much headway pointing out what all they are doing wrong. With a loss, the coaches will have their attention.

Gonna take more than "attention" to make this team competitive against Valpo and Loyola.

RE: Kent State vs. SE Louisiana
We looked like a team struggling to find its identity tonight. Thus far this year it's seemed like we want to be a perimeter oriented guard driven team and work it in to De La Rosa to keep them honest. Tonight we faced a team we had a huge size advantage on and we let them take the inside game away from us. In the second half on Sunday we saw great post passing from Duling and De La Rosa and some great drive to dish plays. Today when we attempted to go inside it seemed like we thought all we had to do was lob it in to him and let him work. Smaller quicker guys can give big men troubles if they're not getting the ball in the spots they like. I think we need to realize that we have a lot of size and when we play an opponent like this we need to work to exploit that. Instead 31 out of our 62 shot attempts were from three.

In addition we've shown on many occasions this year that we want to be an uptempo team. Tonight we seemed to do everything slower. Countless times after SEL scored we were confused who was supposed to inbound it so Avery was left yelling at guys to come back. No real explanation for why that was happening other than maybe the tweak to the starting lineup confused guys on their roles? At any rate, it felt like we played much slower tonight.

Next, they say the three is the great equalizer and tonight that was absolutely true but not in the typical way. Our cold shooting and high volume allowed them to stay in the game. That's the frustrating part about a team that lives by the three is sometimes you'll have nights where it's off and when that happens you could lose to anyone. We have enough size inside and enough perimeter guys that can drive to score or drive to dish that we shouldn't let everything hinge on threes. On possessions we attempted a three we averaged 0.77 points tonight. When we went inside (including free throw possessions) we averaged 1.31 points per possession. That's a huge difference.

Lastly, tonight was just a weird night from start to finish. With students going home for Thanksgiving and the band members at the football game there was literally no atmosphere for the players to feed off. Hopefully this acts as the early season wake-up call to remind them we can lose to any team left on our schedule if we come out expecting the game to be given to us.

Well said, your last paragraph is right on the money. no atmosphere what so ever and the team played that way. hard game when the shots aren't falling

The band and Athletic Dept all at the football game? I thought hoops was the priority? Our three point shooting is atrocious. Without Walker this game could have gotten ugly. I am sure Rob will be working on defending the three and also on an offense that will let us utilize our size

This team is going to be good. Has the chance to be better than last year. Be patient.

Ditto ... JWalker has to reel himself in. Waaaay to many 3s for an average 3-point shooter at best ... individually and as a team ... not enough taking it to the paint.

It's early so hopefully this is a reminder of what the team had to change LAST YEAR to be good,... and they can respond quicker this year.

Trio of ADR, Pippen and Frederick had combined for 25/15 the first three games ... need that to be every night.

Still early ... still a good team there, just need to find a comfort zone. Nice 9-man rotation, too.

Gotta disagree here. Walker's shot selection has not been an issue at all so far. He's made some seemingly wild turn around mid range jumpers but clearly he's put in a ton of work on that shot because I don't think he's missed one yet. So far he's shooting 53% overall and 38% from 3 and while he still takes some shots early in the shot clock he's taking good looks. His shot is really smooth and he has such a quick release as long as he's not taking bad shots he's got a bright green light at all times in my eyes.

In regards to him being an "average 3-point shooter at best" I strongly disagree. He was at 33% each of the last two years which isn't amazing but it was higher than the team average both years. And in my eyes the shot selection held that percentage down the last two years. So if that's fixed then I think we'll see him sustain the higher percentage.
