MBB Gameday experience
Has anyone noticed a new and improved game-day experience at men's basketball games yet? Apparently, Kent State hired someone from the Cavs just to improve the atmosphere and the student experience. Has anyone noticed anything? I haven't. Here's the article from Crain's that talked about it ... http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/2...s-and-game

RE: MBB Gameday experience
I have been at every home game this season, and no, I have not noticed anything different, other than they throw out some plush basketballs and waaaay more t-shirts now. The games they play in between time-outs are boring, and the half-time entertainment has been bleh. I have noticed more students than normal. The MACC Maniacs are growing. But, the gameday experience is nothing to write home about. Tuesday night was veeeeeery boring!

The rock, paper, scissors game during the timeout has really increased the level of excitement.

The schedule hasn't exactly been exciting, either. A NAIA DII school just cannot be your home opener. It can't.

We can't blame ticket prices, either. Ours have to be the cheapest in Division I. At least the non-PSLs.

At some point the fans have to take ownership and actually provide the atmosphere. It can't ALL be manufactured.

Agree in principle but a basketball game without a pep band is pretty much doomed. My problem is stuff like rock, scissors, paper during timeouts actually kills the atmosphere for me. I’m not sure 6 year olds enjoy that promotion. Let the band play during the timeouts(assuming they are there).

Also it says a lot when the band and the Athletic department travel to Akron to watch a 2-10 football team when they said basketball was the priority. Actions say more than words. The AD and the President have some work to do if they want us to believe basketball is a priority. Once they do that work then it might be appropriate to call out the fans.

no band , no students = quiet night at the MACC. Football is still #1 sport in Ohio even as bad as Kent has been over the years, as much as we would like to say basketball is the focus, it has been pretty much lip service to far.

It seems to me that simply proclaiming that men's basketball is the number #1 sports is as far as they plan to go.

At the end of the day it's still about funding and budgets. When we can't get more than 3,000 people to a game and have the cheapest tickets out there, not sure how else you generate revenue in the private sector.

We let Gates hold us for ransom on his jersey retirement and what have we ever really received from him in terms of private support?

We can wish and dream for the moon, but we still have the same budget restraints we did before.

Exactly, JimJoyce. What more can the university do besides merely saying that men's basketball is their flagship sport, besides dropping other sports? I know the football team gets those big pay days when they play Alabama, Clemson and the like, but I assume that football still doesn't generate a profit. If I'm wrong, please correct me. And dropping football never seems to be discussed.

I think I once heard the football budget was around $5 million. If that's still the case, then adding an additional "money" game (next year at Ole Miss) should allow them to break even each year.
