Five Top 25 Pass D's. Eleven Top 25 Rush D's. Eight Top 25 Scoring D's. Six Top 25 Total D's.

Ten Top 25 Pass O's. Ten Top 25 Rush O's. Thirteen Top 25 Scoring O's. Twelve Top 25 Total O's.

Just from looking at that, this appears to be a more offense heavy playoff field. The best defenses are likely to prosper.

I was surprised that Stony Brook was dead last in total offense.

If we were to face Southern Utah, they were third to last in total defense and next to last in passing D.

Those defensive numbers for JMU are just ridiculous. There probably isn't an offense that bad in all of FCS.

Yep. I see some people saying "watch out for SUU". I then saw those D stats of theirs. No, we're good. They're going to need to be much more productive than that to knock off the #1 team in their house.

RE: 2017 FCS Playoff Field - National Statistics
we gave up 99 points. (only 1 TD in the last four games)

I believe 21 were on returns...kickoffs or turnovers

real defensive ppg is:

99-21 = 78/11 = 7.1 ppg

you could even go further and throw out the two TD's scored by ECU and W&M in major garbage time of blowouts with backups in:

78-14 = 64/11 = 5.81 ppg given up by our first team defensive unit.

absurd numbers.

This is also indicative of the difference between conferences. The Big Sky was known for high-octane offenses this year, but little defense. Think EWU, NAU among others. Meanwhile, the CAA was all about defense this year - JMU, SBU, UD, Villanova. Guys like UR QB Lauletta did not really shine as much as expected. Even Bryan Schor's stats were lower than where I think many expected.

If we play SBU in Round 2 as expected, I think they score 7-10 on JMU. 24-10 would be my early prediction.

I agree. The Big Sky was definitely offense oriented teams this year. I don't think that bodes well for any of them in the playoffs. I'm sure playing Oregon and getting torched 77-21 certainly didn't make their defense look too good.
As we all know, we didn't allow any more than 14 points all season. As for Southern Utah, they didn't allow any LESS than 14 points all season. That should be very concerning for them.

Would be nice to have the list updated as the tournament progresses. From the list. NDSU looks to have stiffer competition in Wofford and JSU. It will be interesting to see if one of them can knock off NDSU. JMU toughest opponent seems like it would be Stony Brook. Though offensively SUU and SDSU would probably present challenges. Should be interesting.

I plan on updating the stats each week as fewer teams remain and they add another week to their season totals. This’ll be a thread I’ll keep bumping.

RE: 2017 FCS Playoff Field - National Statistics
What's great about this 2nd round is that six of the games are toss-ups. The JMU/SB and NDSU/SD games are the only ones expected to be convincing wins for the seeded teams. Every other match-up is only 4-8 point favorites and #6 SHSU and #7 Wofford are actually underdogs in their games.

Other upsets that wouldn't surprise me. Kennesaw State beating Jacksonville State, Northern Iowa beating South Dakota State and possibly Weber State beating Southern Utah. UNH could have a chance against UCA if they didn't have such a mediocre offense.

On the question of who we'd rather face in the quarterfinals, Weber State or Southern Utah, Sagarin says Weber is slightly better. Massey thinks we'll have a slightly harder time against SUU.
SUU looks like a potent passing offense with no defense to speak of. Weber looks like a much more balance team but not earth shatteringly good offensively. They also have a much better defense but it is still only average compared to a very bad SUU defense.
Personally, i'd rather face a team with a very suspect defense (SUU) and take the passing offense risk (which we've shut down this year). Either way, Weber or SUU kind of looks like a toss-up.
