When you guys were in the CAA our basketball team was a doormat for many years. Shaver came along and we showed signs of life, but since you mortgaged your b-ball team for a football program we’ve actually become a much better program. We’ve had four straight winning seasons, three of those at or over 20 wins. You could make some argument that the CAA isn’t as tough, but I don’t buy it given Mason is a shell of its former self and you guys seem to be down a bit.

Before this season started we weren’t sure what to make of this team. We lost our two biggest playmakers to graduation, potential starting forward (good chance he would have been replaced by Knight, but he started last year) and another key player to transfer. With Cohn as the only returning starter, this is a team with talent but not much experience. That was evident against High Point. But I don’t think we’ll be in the 175+ RPI range once the season is over. Obviously we still use the 3 a lot, but do have guys who can drive and play inside if needed. We’re all waiting to see how this team comes together.

Free throws are a confidence issue. Go to the line thinking your going to miss, and guess what, you're going to miss. Honestly, I can't remember how many games we've given away due to poor free throw shooting. Is there a reliable way to increase our percentage? Would it be dedicating a portion of practice, for the rest of the year, on free throw shooting? Or hiring a counselor to get inside these guys heads? Because it's definitely a mental thing.

Pretty sure I've read this post every year for about the past 7-8 years.

Well damn it there has to be an answer. I won't give up until I find it.

Here's some good tips on free throw shooting. Someone pass this along to Jeff Jones.

Bring back the Rick Barry granny shot? Canyon Berry shot over 88 percent doing that for Florida last season.

And please on the **** happens bit. This loss wouldn't nearly suck as bad had Jones not also lost 3 of the previous 4 against them. We rag cusa for not giving us an opportunity for an at large. But we lose to Wm every year. Thomas Jefferson graduated from there and they've never made the NCAA tournament

I don't disagree on the ragging on CUSA part — I've always said that we have no business complaining about conference performance when ODU has no titles.

But even though it's yet another loss to W&M, I think you can look at it differently than the other ones. It wasn't the rock-fight loss from 2015 or shooting 30 percent from the field on the way to getting pantsed at home last season. ODU wins last night's game the overwhelming majority of the time it gets played, because William and Mary doesn't hit 60 percent of its threes and sink one from 50 out at the horn every night. Last night's loss sucked because of that, not because of systemic issues with the program (which you could make a case for in the previous defeats).

Do we shoot over 60% from the field the vast majority of times? Does BJ go 11 for 12 and score 26 the vast majority of times? W&M is not the only team that had some good things happen for them last night. The fact is we should be so much more talented that they can't beat us 4 times in a row no matter what happens.

Shooting 60% from there is the equivalent of shooting 90% from two. Most of those shots were contested threes or shots taken 3-4 feet behind the line. We played a very good game and still lost. Yes, we maybe left five points at the free throw line, but we dominated or played respectably well in every other facet. If you're expecting a team to come out and beat their average in EVERY statistical category every night you need to stop posting on these boards until you know more about both math and sports.

They didn't do that in a vacuum. This is also the 4th time in a row they've beaten us. At what point do you stop blaming luck and accept reality.

The previous 3 losses were not luck. Last night was luck. We were the better team and we win that game 19 times out of 20. I guess I am looking at it in a vacuum, but in past years I didn't get the sense we were the better team.

You cannot seriously believe we would beat a team that we have lost 6 of 7 to 19 out of 20 times. That is delusional. We are not nearly as talented as you think we are.

I'm not talking about the last 7 years. This year's team ODU team, playing at the level they played last night beats this years W&M team 19 times out of 20... if not more like 99 times out of 100. The stars aligned; that was an anomaly.

Not to step into your internal discussion on the state of ODU, basketball, but there seems to be some sense among some ODU fans that everything went WM's way on Saturday and the game was a total anomaly (e.g., above claim that ODU wins 19 out of 20). A few things worth mentioning, we were missing Paul Rowley with an injury. He had started every game to date. Nathan Knight played a below average game and sat for much of the 2nd half with foul trouble. While there is no denying we were hot from behind the arc, that is not out of character for this team. We had hit on 20 3-pt attempts just the previous game (yes, against a DIII opponent).

I think it s also fair to state that ODU had a lot of things go your way as well. While a lot of your shots were dunks, I also recall a number of very friendly bounces on jumpers, and even one that got banked in from 15 feet in the 2nd half. I doubt either team shoots as well in a rematch.

Bottom line, WM has a young, but fairly talented team (start three sophs). We'll be up and down this year with some bad losses, but will also pull off more quality wins. I suspect middle of the pack CAA. It was a great and entertaining game (and I said as much before Tot hit his shot and I had resigned myself to a tough loss). Until next time...

PS - If you want to come bask to the CAA, I'm sure the good folks at WM would put a good word in for you.

This was a very entertaining game that was great fun to watch! I wish we would have won, but I enjoyed the good competition.

After stewing over the weekend over another loss to the Nerds, I'll say this much.

Win this Saturday and all will be forgiven.

I wonder how this thread would read if the 55 footer didn't fall?

My take would not be different. Also, to your point that they were just unconscious and making ridiculous 3s and it was just dumb luck that we lost. I re-watched the second half and almost all of their 3s were good rhythm shots that we were slow to get out on.

I'd say we played a good game, but were very fortunate to win because lack of free throw shooting skill gave WM a chance to steal one at the end. Pretty much the same thing Im saying now, only that it sucks that they did steal one and it hurts our post season chances tremendously. We can't let these games slip away.

Oh what fun this Saturday is going to be. If i were Mike Rhoades my whole bench would be playing. Id make sure to tell my guys you foul them before they get a good shot off. Im sorry but our guys are piss poor at foul shooting and dont expect us to win tight games if thats how we're going to shoot.

Hope some of them read this. YALL SUCK AT FT SHOOTING. Act like the damn D1 basketball players you all are.

TJ would have killed it from 3. But it was much harder to make the dance before they expanded to 8 teams in 1939.

That's why he started UVa., because he knew an ACC school would have a better chance at a bid.
