We can't get pressure on a QB when we play 10-12 yards off receivers. Its been the struggle all year and any decent quarterback is going to eat us up 5 yards at a time.

This doesn't even make sense.

If the QB can get the ball out of his hands quickly, its hard to sack him.

Then why do we have a bunch of sacks?

We are #23 in the nation in sacks.

I would argue that its impressive we have that many sacks in spite of our soft coverage. Imagine if opposing QB's didn't have someone open immediately.

Because we haven't played many good QB's. Mike White is the best that we went against. Stockstill will be at that level IMO.

Or maybe people are completely overstating the "soft coverage."

I don't know, we give up a ton of underneath stuff, but it largely seems to be working for this group.

We also sacked White 3 times and got after him a bunch of other times.

RE: ODU @ MTSU
We definitely have a chance in this one but I don't believe we can let them throw the ball consistently for 5-7 yards. The soft coverage will have to go and we will need to pressure their receivers, otherwise im afraid our defense will wear down. I believe Western Kentucky passed for almost 500 yards against Middle Tennessee so there must be some weakness there. We will need to unleash Steven's running ability to win this one I think.

I get the impression we care more about this game than they do. Or maybe we are just more open about it

RE: ODU @ MTSU
Frankly, I think we ODU fans do care more than the Blue Raider fans. I think they are gravely disappointed that the season has not turned out better for them, and they are just ready to move on to roundball. On the other hand while our season has also been a huge disaster and disappointment, we are in the process of salvaging something from a lost season and can avoid a losing season when no one thought that would be possible just a few weeks ago. So -- don't know about you, but you can bet your sweet ass I want this first win over Empty Sue. Go Monarchs!

Stockstill isnt much of a run threat which is good for our defense. Stockstill has 29 att for 16 yds (0.6 avg). If we can get pressure on the pocket, he should fold like a lawnchair.

Yeah, but he's a good passer, and we give opponents receivers yards of cushion. We may need a lot of sacks and hurries to affect him.

Yes, my point was just that he is not much of a dual threat.

This is looking like a dink and dunk fest shaping up. We consistently give up 8-10 yards per pass play, so I'm wondering what MT's red zone efficiency looks like. Can you really expect to win many games playing 2 minute drill on defense all game?

Stockstill is averaging 6yds an attempt so that fits right in with the dink and dunk strategy.

Here are some more advanced stats for MTSU https://www.footballstudyhall.com/pages/...al-profile

RE: ODU @ MTSU
So here's my question. After 11 games, can the Defensive Coordinator throw in any new wrinkles for this one game? Is it feasible to play a more physical, bump 'em at the line of scrimmage pass defense with out completely giving up the zone D? In order to win this game I think we'll need to throw SOMETHING different at them. We are as predictable as me having to pea at 4:00am.

What makes you think Nagy could do that. He can stop a simple run up the middle on 3rd and 9. Nagy is the worst defensive coordinator ever. Yes our guys make some plays but that is basically out of shear talent. Not because Nagy has them in the right position. The defense should have won the Rice game for us. Instead the almost lost it for us against a 1-9 team at home when our season was on the line. I have no faith in Nagy, we need a new D coordinator like yesterday.
