The siren has been around forever.
People like it and expect it.
If you believe for 1 second The folks across the street and on Boston spend time in their bathtubs because of it, you have other problems.
They know what it means, and have for years.

The Liberty Bowl sound system is 1000 times worse than the siren.

Siren is the only thing that sounds 'good' bouncing off all the walls there. You can hear it anywhere you are.

The sound system was terrible when I left town 12 years ago.
Amazing, quite frankly that problem hasn't been corrected.

The thing is, Iowa State has an actual tornado siren sound and it sounds pretty cool. It's ominous. Ours sounds stupid.

Either the tiger roar, as someone suggested, or maybe a steam whistle, ala a riverboat whistle or old steam train whistle.

You want to go really unique, a steam calliope playing a tune, maybe a cut from the fight song.

I hate the siren. I agree it is small time, like the fans can't generate enough noise so we have to insert a siren.
