How have you made your determinations after 4 games ? Not saying a tourney team but after yesterday’s game we might as well packed up the tent and turned down CBI..
The same way the "experts" casting our game made the determination that we are a tourney team and that we could make a run. trust me, i love my alma mater as much as anyone here, but the last team we put on the hardwood that "could" have made a run flamed out. and as a matter of fact, we haven't even won 2 games in the same tournament in our history in d1. until i see a team hit the floor in blue that looks and plays the part of a tournament team i personally wouldn't use the words 'run' and 'ncaa tournament' in the same sentence. Anyways, see yall in williamsburg next weekend for what is hopefully going to be a bloodbath.

RE: Indiana State
You can count me among those who have been very pleasantly surprised by this team so far.
I like the pace at which they're playing, both in transition and in the half court. I like the confidence being displayed (including the young guys) and the resilience shown in the face of adversity, i.e. over-coming the big half time deficit to Temple. I love the play of our back court...I think these guys could be special. I like the play of our front court, especially Porter, although I think Brandon will get better as the year goes on. I think Aaron Carver is really under-rated. To me, he's picked up most of the defense and rebounding slack from Denzel, but has been adding a ton more offense than Denzel ever contributed. Even free throw shooting is showing signs of improving. Yes, I know Towson and Temple weren't good, but JMU and Indiana State were very good...that's a positive to build on. I like that JJ hasn't been pulling guys immediately after a missed shot or turn-over. They need to have confidence that they can screw up and not get yanked right away.
There are also some things I would like to see or that I'm not crazy about. I'm a bit concerned about the minutes being played by Caver and I hope they can find him some effective relief. Otherwise, he might wear down over the course of the season. I'm still waiting to see a zone defense (I haven't seen every game, so I might have missed it). I would like Brandon to slow down a bit on the offensive end. I think he tends to rush his shot or sometimes force a 12 foot jump hook. I would like to see Hueitt get more minutes earlier in the game. But these are more nit-picks.
Overall, I'm really enjoying the team and their game this year. This is more like what I remember of Old Dominion basketball before Blaine Taylor arrived. Faster, looser and generally much more fun to watch. I hope they keep it up!

Very complete game by the Monarchs. We don't have to have all cylinders firing, but if most start clicking we can be a very good team. Thought with Jordan and Denzel gone the defense would drop off. What has happened, now we got a couple of players who will take a shot. Which has improved the offensive look of the team and defense is still there.

RE: Indiana State
Didn't meant to sound like a downer. i am ultimately optimistic about the direction that both of our basketball programs are heading, i am just trying to be realistic about what our past has been and that being a better indicator of whether or not we are a tourney team capable of a run than a couple of talking heads that have probably watched approximately 300 less old dominion basketball games than i have and more than likely haven't followed them through all of the ups and downs of the last 13 years since being a student
i do really hope we absolutely thrash william and mary. i used to love going to games at their place to watch us smack them around...lately it hasn't been so enjoyable.

Yes, that's correct. Good game today. Caver obviously had his best game. My thought is maybe it helped him to be a little tired from playing 40 minutes the day before. That sounds crazy but the guy is in such incredible shape I wonder if he has been too jacked up before every game. He seemed to be a little calmer today. Maybe he should do the pregame workout regime that Freeman used to go through. He would look worn out an hour before the game, but it didn't hurt his performance.
Also, I like Brandon taking the shots he has. If he quits taking those we will have another Denzel Taylor on the team. Stith has good form and if/when those shots start to fall he will be a load to go along with Porter. Speaking of Porter he is one tough guy around the basket and has been under much better control in this tournament. Carver is a great compliment to our two post players. He is just solid. You can tell he has worked hard on his game in the offseason.
One big difference today was that BJ played well, as he has been for most of the season ( except yesterday). He is a huge part of this team.
The guy that needs to pick it up ( in my opinion) is Haynes. He has a big upside but needs to have a little more consistency. I expect as the season goes we will see more of Green at the two and possibly Hueitt if he continues to progress. I like Haynes and his confidence level has jumped up but we need him to put the ball in the basket.
My biggest concern right now is our slow starts on offense. We started slow today but the defense was stellar. At least we came ready to play. GO MONARCHS!!!!

I'm with you on that. If you get Haynes consistent and a threat this team could very well do work.
Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

One angry letter, two letters from realists, three shrugs via twitter, and one essay breaking down the points per possession divided by effective batting average.

RE: Indiana State
Haynes can play and he will score. Just because he's been off for a few games doesn't mean it's going to be that way all year long. I'm just glad guys are putting up shots. Defenses will have to play us totally different this year with him on the court.
But I'm going to stand down and let JJ's actions tell me what Haynes can do. This would literally be the first non-shooter in this coach's tenure that would be allowed to keep shooting when they haven't proven that they can make them. I'll take the coach's view vs the 4 game stat posting expert's.

A bigger work in progress is the backup point guard position. One of these games Caver may not be available for one reason or another.

RE: Indiana State
That was a pretty solid effort today and we looked like a more coherent group. We are still a competent, above average defensive team.
With that said, we shot 20% from the 3 point line, we still can't make FT's and our pace of play is still one of the slower in all of college basketball.
Also, Indiana state is NOT GOOD. They were 11-20 last year for a reason.
Temple and odu have drilled them in both tourney games they've played and while they did beat Indiana, Indiana is TERRIBLE this year, losing to seton hall by nearly 20 and losing to that ISU team by 21 and barely beating 300+ Howard at home.
In other words, while we dominated ISU, I am 100% positive they are not even going to be a 150 or better rpi team so let's please settle down on the "tourney team" talk until we beat a single solitary team that might actually BE in the NCAA tourney.
You guys always seem to lack perspective in the OOC portion of the schedule.

Im more worried about Haynes than a dude that plays 3-4 mins per game. i dont think Pinckney is that bad. If Caver gets hurt, we re done anyways

Ummm, that's why the backup point guard is the bigger issue than Haynes' scoring. ODU can easily substitute for Haynes. Not so much for Caver.

RE: Indiana State
I am pretty pleased thus far with how this team has played. Temple was a missed opportunity, but they just killed us from 3 in the first half. Excited about the new players, particularly Green, but even moreso about the improvement in Porter and Carver.
Team has a good karma, and a win v Dayton would make this tourney a relative success.
