Love em or hate em, what's going on over on Vol Nation right now and in the past week is amazing and I will admit quite humorous as well.
Roughly 200,000 posts on Jon Gruden threads. Right now, they are stalking a plane out of Tampa hoping Gruden is on. A reporter with Fox is there periscoping it just in case Gruden is the one who walks off the plane. No one does a coaching search like UT fans.
If you have time to waste feel free to check em out.

I could see UCF's coach being on that plane, or will he wait for the Nebraska job to come open?

Good news for Memphis is that the UTk fanbase is too snooty to lower themselves to hire Mike Norvell.

Gruden is flying to Knoxville to meet with big Vol booster Jimmy Haslam. He is expected to sign a contract to lead the orange clad fanbase back to great heights.
For Haslam's NFL team. The Cleveland Browns.

I will believe it when I see it with Gruden....He has said numerous times he would be on probation in college with all the rules and how restrictive it is for head coaches...Even if by some chance he takes job, would it not be crazy to say he would not be great as a college coach? College a lot different than NFL, look at Lovie at Illinois, Weis, etc...Have been several coaches who have went from NFL to college and sucked..

All that is a form of coach speak. Just something he says to squash rumors. The Tennessee faithful believe that Gruden is their Saban (except that Gruden is actually an alum). Gruden is much more recognizable than Saban was when Bama hired him. It's hard to imagine Gruden not instantly becoming the best "head coach" recruiter in the SEC.
As a UT alum I want to see it just to see how it actually plays out. As an MT alum I fear we missed our chance to steal all those fence sitters out there to build the program up in the Boro as Tennessee was stumbling for the better part of a decade.

He needs to go save the Browns or the Giants, not Tennessee.

I think the best way to grow a fan base in states like Tennessee and Louisiana is to increase enrollment and hope you can get them to support as alumni. Best you can hope for from non alums are that they attend a game or 2 every season. Speaking for Tech, if we could keep graduates from the university invested I would be happy.

Perhaps not.
They may have cursed themselves when they fired Bill Belichick.

Kiffin getting in on it now trolling the UT fan base. This has been worth the price of admission (which is free so yeah about worth that).

I'm still really confused as to why people want Gruden. Dude hasn't coached football in a decade, hasn't been in the college game in over 25 years and had the easiest Super Bowl by winning with a team built by Dungy that beat a Raiders team that Gruden had literally coached the previous year. I'm also equally confused as to why Gruden would leave his cushy job with ESPN to coach a bunch of 18-22 year-olds.

Especially at a school with a fan base which has unrealistic expectations in a conference with the likes of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, et al.

Probably, because he won said Super Bowl with Brad Johnson at QB. He turned him into a viable quarterback.
There is more QB talent on Tennessee's roster than he probably ever had at Tampa. And NFL coaches don't recruit players. Dungy's players? Really? That's funny.
The GM puts the team together. As to why he would leave his cushy job that's a better question, but he clearly wants to coach again.

RE: Tennessee Fans
SDS just published an article with rare public comments from Johnny Majors. Calls Gruden one of the best coaches he ever had on his staff.
"Good coaches can coach anywhere and at any level. Gruden has the energy to coach at any level and he could handle being successful in recruiting. There would be no adjustment for him as smart as he is and as determined and dedicated as he is." -Johnny Majors
Does that help answer the question westside?

Jon Gruden in August: “If I became a college coach I would probably have you on probation w/in 4 or 5 weeks. Too many rules, man. I mean I like to work. The recruiting … all that stuff. Yeah, I’d probably have you in real deep, deep trouble if I was your college coach”

What he didn't say in that interview is that if he becomes a college coach he will have the entire NCAA compliance manual read on the plane on his way to the announcement (if he hasn't already).
