So... how did ECU's 0* recruit fare in his first game?
Remember everyone had a good laugh when Lebo signed Justin Whatley? The 0* recruit with an offer from Grambling... you couldn't even search Google Images for him... he just flat out wasn't on the internet or on anyone's radar.
He posted fewer than 5 PPG and 5 RPG in HIGH SCHOOL.
Well, in his first ever D1 game vs Coppin State, he finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Lebo on Whatley after the game: "I am very excited about what he can bring to the team, a lot of intangible things. He can shoot the ball, doesn’t make mistakes. He had a good first game here: eight points, six rebounds and playing major minutes, defensively he was the smartest guy out there."
There is much left to be seen... but he looked a lot more polished than expected.

So a MEAC level recruit had an average game against a MEAC team?

You got us, we're all wrong, sign Lebo to a 10 year contract extension.

Haha... all I'm saying is, this 18 year old 0* kid is ALREADY more productive than 95% of the JUCO guys with 2 left feet that Lebo brings in most years.

Does anybody remember who on this forum identified Mr. Whatley as a keeper with only a brief glance at a high school highlight reel? I'll give you 3 guesses.

I'm glad Coppin State was able to provide this kid with his Make-a-Wish moment but let's take a look at how 0* followed up that monster performance against a "formidable opponent" tonight.
4 minutes, 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 anything productive, 4 fouls.

It's not the kids fault. He was never power conference material.

This guy right?
A 6'8" 220lb 2* PF that can dribble coast-to-coast and finish with a reverse layup in traffic is certainly worth a roster spot on a team like EZ-U.
Tekele Cotton was a 2* for Wichita State and became one of the most exciting players in Shocker history.
Ron Baker was a 0*
Samajae Haynes-Jones 2*
Darryl Willis 2*
Asbjørn Midtgaard 2*
Shaq Morris 2.5*
Get back to me when you see those "2 stars* play.

Will they take $1,000,000 to $1
ECU? I just looked at the ECU recruiting class and noticed there was a 1 star signee. I had no idea they gave 1 stars.

An AAC school should never sign a 1 star HS hooper. You're better off keeping that ship open.

Uh... I don't know about anybody else, but I'd take a flyer on a 6'8 true freshman that can dribble coast to coast, beat a defender putting the ball behind his back, and finish under control with a reverse layup. That's not chopped liver at his height. Give him a couple years.
The results of CB's eye test equates to a solid 3* rating. Nice pick up ECU.

Not to be overly negative about a kid receiving a full scholarship to play the sport he loves, but he is hands down the worst recruit coming into the AAC next season.
If this kid sees the floor it's because ECU is either down by 30 with a minute left or because everyone over 6'5 has already transferred out again for the 2nd time in 12 months.

I have to agree. Here are more extensive videos of ECU's recruit, Whatley.
http://www.ncsasports.org/mens-basketbal...in-whatley
There are guys walking on to various AAC squads that are better. Couldn't ECU have gotten Whatley to walk on?

Add in a soft touch around the rim, nice jump hook, physicality on the block, and a propensity to finish above the rim on short warning and he's got potential. If he grew into his body late, he could turn out to be a really nice get. His attitude and intelligence will determine his ceiling as I think he has serviceable tools straight out of HS.

Yes, but remember that ECU beat Marquette once in 1983 and beat Memphis once in 1972 and beat the Cincinnati YMCA All-Stars in 1922, so there is lurking "tradition" there. Just a couple more 0* recruits and gosh almighty, the Pirates will be a fixture on the Greenville public access channel.

a 0* rating is actually not a rating-it just means no Scout had scouted him or reviewed a video of him
