Didn't realize he was only 64, that's too young. It's big news around here (central NC) as the Capel family is considered basketball royalty.

WoW, I'm so sorry to hear about Coach Chapel Jr. We'll Never forget that triple overtime win over Villanova in the 1995 NCAA Tournament. One of the best coaching jobs I've ever seen. My prayers go out to him and the entire Chapel Family.

Capel was my favorite ODU coach. I believe he is the only coach we ever had that never lost a CAA tournament game when we were favored. That could be wrong because I am going by memory but he always had us ready to play.

RE: Former Coach Capel
I had to admire how JMU had put a sticker with Dr. Ron Carrier's name on the wall last night--not sure how many others that were there saw that.

Of course we don't have wall space, primarily because we have an amazing arena vs a HS gymnasium, but I'd be really proud to see ODU honor his memory for the rest of the season by placing his name somewhere in the Ted or by a patch on the jerseys.

That said, I'm not married to the idea. I just think Jeff Capel was all class--and it was particularly notable when and after his coaching days ended at ODU. I saw him in the Charlotte airport several years ago when traveling on business and he spent a half hour just chatting about coaches and player relationships that we both had in common. I really enjoyed it and am pretty certain that he did as well.
