Exactly, the key to us beating good teams is going to be keeping Porter and Brandon in the game without foul trouble. The two of them give us the ability to play the best teams. Our other players are good but Porter and Brandon take us to another level.

Temple led the AAC with 9 made 3s/g (note 6-10 enechionyia and 6-8 Rose shoot from 3). Justin Rose was named to the all-freshman team. Temple was picked 7th in this year’s AAC preseason poll. Temple returns 70% of its minutes and points from last year and welcome the return of PG Josh Brown.

ODU will be Temple's first regular season game. They had one exhibition, a 10-point win against Jefferson University, which is apparently the result of a merger between Philadelphia U and Thomas Jefferson U (the athletic department's site is still house at philau.edu).

We lost two of our worst players in recent years, and get a healthy Josh Brown back.

Sorry. I was at work. We played a charity exhibition against a pretty good D2 program (formerly Philadelphia University), which was a good opportunity for our true freshmen to get some minutes.

How did Josh Brown look in the scrimmage? His leadership cannot be taken lightly... if we are to cut the head off the snake, that would be Josh Brown IMO.

Rusty, but very aggressive. Zero hesitation. He's our most important player.

Temple picked by coaches to finish 7th in AAC. No players on 1st or 2nd All-AAC teams.

Huh. I didn't realize Memphis was so bad. Picked 9th.

Also surprised Wichita State wasn't picked #1. Interesting. I guess it was pretty close though, 116 points for Cincinnati and 115 for WSU.

From what I can tell, the tiers looks like this:

Tier 1: Cincy, WSU
Tier 2: UCF, SMU
Tier 3: UConn, Houston, Temple
Tier 4: Tulsa
Tier 5: Memphis, Tulane, ECU
Tier 6: USF

Possible that Cincy didn’t give their first place vote to WSU

Where do you think the Monarchs would project to finish in the AAC this season? I would guess somewhere between 6-9.

RE: MBB Game 3 - ODU vs Temple (Charleston Classic)
Temple's size looks like it could present problems for ODU tomorrow, especially when Porter is on the bench and our tallest player on the floor is 6'-7". I wouldn't be surprised to see them find size mismatches and post us up for high percentage shots when we are in man-to-man. If we drop guards down to help they will have the open 3 available. One of their guards is listed as 6'-8". They also have 6'-10" & 6'-11" centers, as well as a 6'-10" forward. This game looks like one where a good zone would be very useful to have. Hopefully Temple has first game jitters and rust that the Monarchs don't have.

We need to get a center (with size) signed for next season.

RE: MBB Game 3 - ODU vs Temple (Charleston Classic)
I'm not really worried about Temple's interior play. Even if they are big, they don't play a big, tough style of basketball. They were among the nation's worst in rebounding rate last year. Their bigs like to score, but as a team, they weren't good on defense and they didn't like to rebound. The challenge with defending their bigs is that they step away from the basket and can make shots from deep. The key to success, in my opinion, will be our defense forcing them into shots they don't want to take rather than the ones they do. I'm not necessarily predicting a win for our boys, but, if our guards can hold their own, I like our chances.

I hope you are right about your take on the game Coach. It certainly would give our guys a better chance of success. Philly teams usually play with that inner city toughness so it is surprising to hear that they don't.

The stats that were posted for their 6'-10" & 6'-11" centers don't indicate that they venture out to the 3 point line though. Perhaps they are shooting a lot of jumpers in the 10-15 foot range, I don't know. I'm not up on who they played against last year - - - i.e. did they play against a bunch of teams that also had big line-ups? If so then they may be licking their chops to see our much smaller one (compared to theirs).

One of the 6'10 players was the leader on the team in 3's attempted last year.

I saw that. Will have to play him close out there due to his size advantage. Don't think it will be so easy to run out and jump to contest him with his 3 point attempts.

He is one of the big forwards and not the 6'-10" center that I was referring to though in the post that you copied.

To give you an idea, here are their four tallest returning players and their shot selection from last year:

Damion Moore, 58% of his shots were at the rim, 41.8% were 2 point jumpers.
Ernest Aflakpui, 76.8% at the rim, 23% were jumpers
Obi Enechionyia, 18.8% at rim, 30.5% were 2 point jumpers, 50.8% were threes
Quinton Rose, 43% at rim, 30% were jumpers, 26% were threes

The first two you named are their 2 centers and my most immediate concern, especially if either Porter or Brandan (or both) get in foul trouble, suffer illness, or get injured. Brandan compensates for being just 6'-7" better than most, but still sometimes has problems offensively against a much taller opponent. Those two Temple centers combined are shooting roughly 67% of their shots at the rim. I guess even a 5-6 footer would be far enough out to call it a 'jumper' so I'm guessing that those two are mostly posting up down low to do their damage.

I hope it is what you guessed it to be - mostly an outside game, and we are more on than they are. Just hoping that their size overall doesn't overwhelm us tomorrow.

For the tournament in its entirety, Jones is going to have to rely upon his bench more with 3 games in 4 days. I don't see Caver playing 40 minutes tomorrow like he did against Towson for example.

Fair assumption if we don't see Hueitt in Charleston, he is probably going to redshirt the season? Assuming no injuries elsewhere

I would have to agree with that about Hueitt.
