So has a team ever fallen from the top 2 to out of the poll the next week? With three losses — two to unranked teams, one a 25-point spanking to a ranked team — you'd be hard-pressed to keep Arizona ranked. I'm not even sure if they deserve votes at this point.

they said that Louisville back in '86 did that.

Looking it up and that verifies — Louisville was the preseason No. 2 in the 1986-87 poll, then lost three straight at a tournament and never saw the rankings again.

No shocker there. Too bad the Great Alaska Shootout will not be around anymore.

This is just not a good day for Crimson Tide sports: the basketball team is finishing its game against Minnesota with three players.

A10 drops its 17th game in the last 20 to fall to 33-38.

The only hope for multiple/at-large bids will be if both Rhodie and Bonaventure destroy their conference schedule, going unblemished (or as close as can be) and letting their non-con SOS do the talking for them both...

But that's the extent of my homerism for the A10. Hope. In reality...the above isn't likely. They kill each other in the A10...it's partly how the conference is so well represented in the NCAAT and NIT; parity in the conference. It will be a curse this season.

the problem for the A10 is they even if they get in there- they're going to get seeded horribly.

Looks like the scouting report’s been globally dispersed on Saint Mary’s.

AAC was doing great and ahead of Big Ten until they randomly went 0-6 today with losses to Georgia St, EMU, & A&T.

yeah I think though if you told the AAC they'd be 47-21 after today before the season- I think they'd take it in a heartbeat. They've despite today separated from the A10, which was huge. Still need the bottom tier to improve some, and get teams like UCF healthy. And UConn has to improve.

Portland State 87
Stanford 78
Final

Impressive past few games by the Vikings. Were leading Duke for a long time, nearly beat Butler, and now beat a Pac-12 team.

They've been seeded pretty badly the last 2-3 years as is. I would see the 11-13 range a blessing, quite honestly, rather than the 7-10-seed stew they've been rolling some years.

3-0 on Sunday. There isn't much meat on the schedule for the conference this week, though.

The thing is, RI may get the 11-13 seed. It's getting to the point where if anyone else won, they may be down in the 14 range. Getting to where you'd be seeing a pretty brutal team in the 1st round of the tourney.

If it came to that, they get what they deserve. It would be very interesting, though. When it comes to seeding, it's not pegged to RPI or some other metric so rigorously. I wonder if the committee would be wary of giving the A10 autobid anything worse than the 13-line; you're not really protecting your high seeds putting in the champion of one of its best conferences just suffering from a really down year.

It all depends on the committee and their philosophies on seeding. Anything's possible, but, I kind of see the committee relieving the top of the field from an A10 auto bid, unless that top seed is someone like Gonzaga or a top AAC team (like Cincy or Wichita); I think the majors would be protected.

The champion of a 10th best conference normally doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. The A10 is hardly one of it's best conferences. It was clearly the #8 conference going into the season. And if it's anyone really outside of Rhode Island or maybe St Bonaventure, tough to see anyone close to worthy of anything higher than a 13 seed tops.

Remember 2 years ago MWC conference which was better than A10 is this year- had their champion Fresno St as a 14 seed.

True. There wasn't a big difference between conferences 9-13, but all of those conferences' auto-bids got better respect than Fresno, including the bubble-busting Buffalo, who had a lower RPI than Fresno, but a better seed. Not to mention Iona, in their own bracket. And, even more curious, they got paired up with Utah, the 3-seed, another western school (though, the game was played closer to Utah's home in Denver).

I don't know how or why, considering the 13-4 game was also played in Denver why Iona wasn't flipped for Fresno. Utah should have played Iona, and neither Seton Hall or Gonzaga were well seeded for the Utes in that second game.

they don't go straight off of RPI. Looking at KP-
Iona was 79
Fresno was 105

That year Gonzaga was by their resume a 11 seed. They barely got in the tourney. Seton Hall was 24 in Ken Pom and 19 in RPI- so 6 seed is pretty much exactly what would be expected.

It's more a composite of different metrics; nothing firmly upheld, despite a lot of lip-service for the RPI. 7-10 is just a mash-up, and seedings are impacted by venue/location.

I just don't think we'll agree with the Gonzaga thing, and that's fine. When you compare their numbers to Tulsa, Temple, Michigan, Vandy, and UNI...maybe. Four of those five had no right even being in the tournament, though, other than having a ridiculous number of games against top-50 schools. I think you could have had them go either way, up or down a line, but, yeah, I think the name carried some weight.

UNI and Gonzaga clearly posed some challenges for the field; one a tested tournament program, and the other with a very strong start to the season (including a win against the runner up, UNC) before some injuries saw the team take a big nose-dive before coming back just in time to take care of the MVC the honest way...and, thus, putting Wichita on the bubble. That's why I think some respect could be made to the A10 auto-bid...if the name's right, like Dayton, VCU, or even if URI or Bonnie crapped it up but still won the auto-bid...there's risk there you won't dump onto a high seed. Fresno didn't have that going for them when they stole the MWC. Biased and subjective, sure...but the committee isn't objective.
