Kent State vs. Youngstown State
Basketball season is upon us and the Flashes open up with a familiar foe in a familiar venue. Youngstown State, predicted to finish seventh in the Horizon League this season, is lead by senior guard Cameron Morse. The 6'3 all conference selection from Flint Michigan averaged about 22 points per game last season.

Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun has a youth movement going on in his first year at YSU with eight freshman and three sophomores. There are also a boatload of transfers from various areas around the hinterlands.

There seems to be a sprinkling of veterans who saw some time last season, including a pair of guards from Cleveland St. Ignatius and Youngstown Ursuline.

So...you have to think Kent State is the more seasoned basketball team. The only thing I am holding my breath on is who will the Flashes be able to count on for scoring in the paint?

I like the fact that there is a returning TRUE point guard as well as a couple other ball handlers. I really like that there are a couple players who can fill it up when they get hot. I really really like that there is a wing who can create his own shot. It also seems there should be some decent depth on this year's version of the Flashes.

Looking forward to joining the voice of the Flashes, Ty Linder on WHLO on Saturday.

Kent State 76
Youngstown State 61
Walker messes around and gets a double double.

Hi Fallsdog...
You are going to be sorely disappointed on the radio broadcast...
But, you'll be able to hear Ty on the ESPN3 broadcast!!! I'll be stumbling blindly through the play-by-play on WHLO. Light a candle for me! Haven't done play-by-play for an entire game in over 20 years when I worked a few Hiram College games.

Hey that’s great. All year? Or just Saturday? Take it from someone who knows nothing....score, time remaining, action. That is all the people in radio land care about. Have fun man. I’ll be listening from Cleveland.

Thanks Fallsdog!
It's just for the one game. I'm not sure how I'll do, but it should be a whole lot of fun. It's something I always wanted to do as a kid. But I was always a better writer. Hopefully I can channel my inner Joe Tait rather than my Harry Doyle!
Let me know how I do. I love my family, but I know they'll say nice things even if I fall asleep at the microphone :)

You will do great. Your knowledge will get you through. Go ahead and be a homer. We deserve a little help.

Not WHLO again! I couldn't get it on my car radio in March in Cleveland, and it doesn't come in on my radio in the house. And I live in Kent! The only time I can hear it in my car is when I'm driving to and from campus. I miss WNIR carrying the games. Much better reception. I guess I'll have to listen to it on my phone. And most every game will be on ESPN3, right?

That's odd. The WHLO broadcast for one of the Saturday football games was coming in loud and clear for me, and I live in central Ohio! Could be a difference in night vs. daytime signal strength, I imagine.

I am aware it's just YSU, but we looked pretty good.

Gotta like the killer instinct. We didn't play down to the opponent and we didn't let up when we started to stretch the lead. Good signs. De La Rosa looks so much more comfortable in his body right now. Makes sense since last year was probably his first year playing at under 300 lbs in a long time. I realize ysu didn't have an inside presence but last year he wouldn't have been able to do that to anyone.

Interesting foot note, Duling was the only guy that didn't score tonight. I have a feeling he'll have a pretty nice career at Kent. It could end up being pretty funny that he didn't score in his first game but the team scored 111.

Just returned from the game and really, really like what we saw. This team has a great upside and they play a nice game to watch..... very entertaining. Do not worry about Duling. He affects the game in many ways. We have not seen a freshman at Kent State like this in my time. Everyone, get season tickets for this team as they will deserve it. Happy and sleepy right now.

I really liked how well we handled YSU's full court press. We didn't get rattled, and only turned the ball over a few times under pressure. In previous seasons, we had a hard time with it.

I was in attendance at the game last night and I have to tell you that this team is the best one from beginning to end that I have seen in a long long time at Kent. Tons of depth and very entertaining to say the least. Walker De La Rosa and Pippen stand out as the most impressive last night. I liked Frederick and Johnson also as new to the team. This team is very very deep in talent and has a lot of weapons to throw at the opposing team. Hats off to Senderoff for a great job in assembling the recruits. Can't wait for the next game!!!!

It is a night vs day difference. I live 9 miles from the MAC and I can’t pick it up after dark. I end up using IHeart Radio (which was the point of the station switch) on my iPad.

I agree - at the end of last season, thinking about what we needed to recruit - at guard we were set, just losing Edwin and having Johnson available after his redshirt. At forward, we spent last year with just Hall and ADLR getting a lot of minutes, and playing a lot with 4 guards on the court. So we needed forwards, especially to replace Hall. Senderhoff went out and signed Duling, and also got Frederick and Nwankwo, all tall, highly rated forwards, and Philip Whittington to stockpile for next year.

With the returning experience, I think this team will be a little better that last year's team

RECRUITING HAS BEEN VERY GOOD .... now for Part 2 - It's pretty clear that either Nwankwo is either still recovering from inury, or a project???

My guess a combination of both ... He's a sophomore, so he will be a good example of just how good this staff is at 'COACHING' a player to at least be a reliable performer off the bench.

Good as Pippen and Frederick look to be as backups, they're actually power forwards. The only true post man behind DLR (who only played 15 minutes vs. YSU) is Nwankwo. For Kent to make a true impact, getting 10 productive minutes out of Nwankwo by the end of January could be huge down the stretch ... and a testament to how well these guys can develop players. Interesting to see how it plays out.

RE: Kent State vs. Youngstown State
Excellent start to the season. Taking another D1 program down by 33 points is impressive (with apologies to the KSU football team).

This team will be together for the next two years, with the exception of DR & KZ. So you have to be bullish on this season & the next, assuming no major impacts to the program occur (injuries, transfers, etc.).

Watching the game, it was evident (to me) that KSU was the stronger & more well-conditioned team. KSU just looked more fit, confident, & intimidating. I believe that the recent emphasis on Sports Performance & dedicating Coach Vail to basketball sports performance has to have had a positive impact, especially this early in the season. Hopefully, this will also contribute to keeping injuries to a minimum.

Looking for good things this season, & beyond. Go Flashes.
