As 70s stated there is really no reason to need to pay anyone. If you cant come to agreements with teams then that is the problem, nothing else. When playing top teams the mentality of buy games is practical because those teams can literally play anyone they want, so they have leverage. If everyone truly want that to stop teams would stop agreeing to buy games at all and everyone would negotiate fairly, but you would also get the top tier teams to only play decent squads leaving the mids and low majors behind further. But there is no reason teams cant schedule games like the ones that happened in the defunct bracketbusters. In fact that type of scheduling is exactly what should be happening on our own. Find like schools and schedule home and homes. If your team is not going to be very good schedule lower ranked teams for home and homes. It all works out in the end if each school is willing to work hard to find opponents.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Which one would you prefer? I would prefer a mix, where we can play DII's/DIII's and P5's. Also, McGrath was in a pinch trying to get this year's schedule in place when he was hired last spring.

There is a big difference in scheduling teams that are not division I and teams that are. This comparison is like in football the teams in FBS scheduling FCS (evn though both are technically division I). And in that breath I still agree there is no reason for FBS teams to ever play FCS teams. In basketball, division I teams shouldnt be playing division II or III teams, period. Need a home game, go find a lower division I school, they are out there. There are like 351 division I basketball schools. Find one to play.

/steps down off of soap box

I’m even ok with playing Wesleyan because they’re part of a bigger tournament; even in the Maui invite someone has to play Chaminade every round. But Greensboro college or any other D3 or D2 should not ever be on the schedule in late December

Agreed. A home opener "tune-up" game against a D-II or D-III is fine. But having those games come later in the season just throws things off. It's a bad look.

Cupcake tuneups was one reason why last year's 29 win team would have not made the NCAA tournament as an at-large. They don't fool anyone.

Eh. 1 cupcake tuneup is fine, because most schools do that these days. Multiple is not. Last year's team played Pfeiffer on Dec 3. That was a much bigger issue than the Claflin game. It's true that as a 13-seed, the committee saw us as a non-at large team. But that's just 1-seed below the bubble line, a 12-seed, so we weren't exactly KILLED by those 2 games.

But last year's team also lacked quality wins. Saint Bonaventure was our best victory, and they were a middling A-10 squad. ETSU was a good win too, but nothing particularly special. Losing to Middle Tennessee (a fellow tournament team) and getting blown out by Clemson, an NIT team, didn't help either. We didn't have any "bad losses" outside of the CAA, but we didn't have a "signature win" either, which the committee doesn't tend to like.

It's OK to have a non-DI game on your schedule. It can be forgivable even to have 2 of them. But you had better balance it with tough games, and you'd better win those games.

Exactly. It's the reason our men's soccer team just got an at-large. We played great competition in the ACC and came away with one win, two losses and one tie. Not a great record, but against great competition and were all close. And add that to our overall winning record and you have an at-large berth.

The only positive of these 1 off's against non D1 schools is they give you a cheap home game without having to do a return visit the next year, thus increasing scheduling flexibility.

However, if you do it every I believe as 70's suggested, there are better alternatives.

I would much rather get on a rotation with Coastal like we have with Campbell where we host 1 a year and travel to 1 a year. That is an easy road game travel wise.

solo, the problem with that, much like Campbell, is that we have nothing to gain in our road matchups with a team like Coastal. We play Campbell because they're one of our oldest rivals and we just can't quit them. But starting a new series with Coastal would present a similar dilemma. When we face those types of teams on the road, they tend to treat it like their "Super Bowl".

I know we're not supposed to look down on teams because that's what the P5's do to us. But the system gives us no other choice. We can't afford to play low level DI's in series, because losses to them would be very damaging to our resume. But we also have trouble getting DI's on or above our level to come to Trask.

It certainly makes it tough on the scheduling, and is why I don't get TOO pissed when I see cupcakes on it. What choice do we have? If we want to put together an at-large worthy resume, the only way to do it would be to play a bunch of road buy games and win some of them....but we don't want too many of those either!

Nation, I hear what you are saying and I agree with you to a certain extent. But I do think you are underrating Coastal. They are now apart of the Sunbelt conference and they had an RPI higher than W Michigan and E Kentucky, 2 of our true road games last year.

I would rather play a Campbell or Coastal on the road than host a non D1 school. Playing a true road game helps the RPI and the fact that both of these teams are in a very reasonable driving distance helps make up for the fact we do are missing out on a game at Trask.

Look at our schedule this year. We have 4 non conference home games and 2 of them are non D1. Id rather have 3 non conference home games with all of them being D1 and the 4th one being a regional rival like Coastal.

Definitely would be easy to make that less than 1.5 hour drive to Conway, I'll agree with you there. That would be the shortest road trip of any D-I opponent.

Agreed that playing one as part of a tournament is a completely different discussion.
