They are a good team, they have won the games on their schedule, and the hurricane screwed them out of a nice OOC chance. Being all that as it may, their SOS sucks. If I was them, I'd be fine with the ranking.
Maybe is Cincinnati had anything remotely resembling a football team our SOS might be better.
The problem is, just that. Not to offend anyone, but teams that should be better.
Tulsa (Rebuilding)
Cincy (New coach, rebuilding)
ECU (Something)
Temple (New coach, rebuilding)
Houston (New coach, rebuilding)
Navy (Down year)
SMU (A season away)
Those are the teams in the conference that are expected to be players to solid players. In conference they can do ok but we're going to beat each other up in conference typically. Where we need all of our teams to be strong is OOC. The top teams in any given year will beat up the middle and the bottom. The middle will beat up the bottom and so on.
If we can win some big OOC games then it makes the conference look stronger. We can't keep losing by 4-5-6 scores against the stronger opponents on our schedules.
The AAC is going to be viewed weaker at the top because we weren't able to do anything OOC. We had our chances.
I think next year, the conference as a whole will have stronger teams as long as we bring in solid replacements for the coaches we're bound to lose.
Could you imagine where we'd be today if.
Herman was coaching Houston.
Taggert was coaching USF. (I think he's better than Strong)
Rhule was coaching Temple.
To add too.
Norvell at Memphis
Frost at UCF.
Morris at SMU.
Niumatalolo at Navy.
We could have potentially had 5 or 6 maybe even 7 teams capable of being top 30. There is a lot of turnover at our top schools and not everyone follows a Fuente up with a Norvell or a coach that can make an impact immediately.
I think next season or the season after we can really push for something big as long as everyone improves and the coaching hires are correct. We're not gonna get respect because we want it or by being 11-1 or 12-0 against 80-120 SOS's. We have to do better against better competition OOC and the teams within have to get better.
*** Even with all of this, we are still easily the class of the G5. Our goals aren't to be the best G5 though. It's to plant an AAC Flag into the upper echelon and really turn into a (P) conference. ***
