Pera let the bench play a little early, for one thong.

A 7 point win over an NAIA team isn't reassuring, but it is Pera's first game.

From 73-56.. Wow.

Did we stop shooting or just go ice cold?

Bench subs.....

RE: MBB vs NAIA team
I was pleasantly surprised. We lost a lot from last year, but I don't think people realize the guys we return can play and have all improved which is nice to see (well no Cashaw tonight but the others who did play all are improved).

I do agree we may not have a go-to scorer. But we can also go much bigger this year which will present some match-up problems. I think Martin may be the breakout star this season. Harrison also has that potential. We'll need Adams on the court - he really didn't play much the last 8-10 minutes and that's why we went from a 20-point lead to a 7-point win. Lapray was much better than I expected but I think I'd keep him on the bench for now as instant offense off the bench.

Of the freshman, Hunter was the most impressive and it's nice to see he can play point guard too.

We're not going to be a 20-win team like last year, but we're not going to be anywhere close to football level either. I think Pera and his staff were good picks and I'm encouraged by what I saw.

Team will be better than Braun's last 2 yrs and Rhodes first. Certainly better than the year in the wilderness, but so many things went horribly wrong that year so not a fair comparison

We subbed heavily from 5 to go and Wayland still pretty much played their rotation and hit a number of shots they hadn’t made most of the game, we had no size on the floor so the pressure turned us over or forced us into bad shots.

Really pleased with how we attacked the boards and thought AJ will pick up some of the scoring we lost from Egor. He has a good shooting touch, nice court vision and passing. He won’t get the boards Egor got but otherwise he looked as advertised.

Austin Meyer looked much more active as well. He owned the boards in the 1H.

I thought he was active under the boards last year, as well. His problem was getting into quick foul trouble.

Let me be more specific. Austin appeared quicker with greater leaping ability than last season, particularly on the defensive boards. He was way above the rim and the opposing players on several rebounds. And on a night where the officals were calling everything, he had 3 fouls in 20 minutes of floor play.

That is very good news. Last year, I thought lack of leaping ability and foul trouble were his big deficits.

Austin is noticeably slimmed down from last season and supposedly has been working hard in the weight room during the off season. To me it showed in his performance last night.

Should be noted that Wayland is a prolific scoring team that we pretty much stifled for most of the game. Think that bodes well for our defense.

I don't believe we did any full court press last night? Maybe we will later in the season but it's possible we just try the defensive pressure near the basket instead. Of course, we didn't press as much last year as many would have preferred either.

RE: MBB vs NAIA team
Scott told me we wouldn't press much this year. He wants Ako to push the ball upcourt offensively, and doesn't think he could hold up playing at that pace the whole game. Next year we will press more as we'll have greater depth. Last year the plan was to press more, but the coaches looked up and Egor was shooting 60% from 3 and Marcus was playing great. Those two needed to play a lot of minutes and couldn't go at that pace the whole game.

That's reasonable.

I do think our defense will be better this year just because of our length. No more lineups with 2 6-2 guards, no Egor at power forward. Aside from when Lester is at the point, pretty much everyone we play will be average to taller than average at his position. And we could go with a 6-5, 6-5, 6-7, 6-8, 6-9 lineup for decent stretches this season - that's about as tall a unit as I can ever recall at Rice.

RE: MBB vs NAIA team
I was a bit concerned with the number of turnovers from Martin, Austin and Najja Hunter. Several of them were unforced. Hopefully it is just opening game and (in the case of Najja) Freshman jitters. A.J. Lapray was better than I initially thought he would be. He has a nice shooting touch, but may not be able to create space like Egor was able to do, which allowed him to score in so many ways. Dylan Jones contributed defensively as well, which is a nice plus. I think the biggest challenge is going to be depth at point guard this year. I was not impressed with Miles Lester. I hope I am wrong about him. I will keep an open mind.

Unfortunately I will be out of town for the games on the 10th and 14th. Hoping for positive results.

Hopefully Cashaw plans to shoot a lot more, his 3-pt% has been very good at Rice. Adams shot well last year after a slow start. I think the team has more shooters that we are giving them credit for. Key will be whether they can get guys open shots.

I also think we're going to see significantly more scoring in the post than we've seen in recent years. Meyers, Martin and Harrison can all score.
