We’ve been having a discussion over on the UTEP home board about how much we can afford to pay our future football coach. We paid Kugler $515,000 a season but I argue that if we didn’t over pay Floyd we could pay our future coach at least $800,000 if he was worth it. Does anyone pay their men’s basketball coach more than the football coach? Latest figure I could find on Floyd is $600,000 a season.
I would say if you want a legitimate D1 head coach, the salary for that has now reached at least $1 million. Not all coaches make that in the league, but that's where we are it would seem.

That’s where I’m at. I’ve been saying we need a million dollar coach since around 2010. Now it’s closer to 1.2-1.5 million. Assuming our budget is 1.1 million for both like it currently is then I would be happy with at least $800,000 for a good up and coming football coach. And around $300,000 for an up and coming basketball coach.
For the record, Stockstill is at $804K, but is due a raise of at least $100K per year beginning in 2019. He could be at $1.1 million in '19 if he gets to seven wins this year and next year.
Kermit is now making $750K.
Another factor is how much are you paying assistant coaches?
MT is paying both coordinators $300K. About $1 million total for the assistants. So, that's over $2.5 million just for the football staff and head basketball coach. Anyone think we are over paying?
Good link and wow no wonder we haven’t a won a game. Kugler had the lowest guaranteed salary in the conference. Is there a similar site but for basketball?
Seth Littrell is paid around a million dollars per year (varies based on incentives) but next year will be guaranteed at least a million + any incentives he gets. We paid a $500,000 buyout for Grant McCasland and I believe his salary now is $500,000 guaranteed + another guaranteed $100,000 in other annual income. So FB gets 1 mil + incentives, basketball gets $600k + incentives.

I've noted this in previous years too and I have no idea how they do it. Would really like to know.
I think the ADs are smarter and realize that if you paid a coach $550k giving that coach a raise to 850k after one winning season is still not enough to keep him there. They know that if the AAC or a P5 comes after that coach they have zero shot at matching numbers. They know that most coaches are not moving to take a job in CUSA for a couple hundred thousand more. If that was the case they would then match it.
I think they also go after coaches working their way up and not after the hot OC. I think they also realize there are only a limited number of head coaching jobs coming open each year. So those wanting to be a head coach will take less money on that first contract just to get one of the 130 head coaching jobs.
Western was not that smart....the very first contract is the only time a school will be in a power position when it comes to a head coaches contract. There was ZERO reasons to pay Mike Sanford 800k. That's $25,000 less than Brohm made. No other school was coming after Sanford and to be honest he probably was getting canned at ND.
A MAC school would have offered him $450,000 to maybe $500,000 and at 34 years old wanting to be a head coach. He takes it even if it's a pay cut.
Only a very few OC's move up a P5 head coach so they know to get in the game of seeking out that 3 million a year contract. They have to be a head coach somewhere. Position coaches are never moving up to a P5 job with being a head coach first.
POWER.....some schools like Western gives it away. Most Mac schools don't
