RE: 2018 Football Home Games
Lot of CYA in that interview. It is always about the money.
Let’s keep in mind that 95% of FCS schools are bleeding lots of money in football and they need the cash.
JMU is in a position of power, not in a position of weakness for OOC scheduling. It is shameful to buy into the thinking that only Robert Morris will take a guarantee game in Harrisonburg.
I will agree that low level FBS teams may shy away because they are paying to win, not get beat by a FCS Power. But there are plenty of other FBS teams more than willing to pay and play JMU. That is a non-issue.

Any chance the 2018 schedule is weak, poor and Bourne because Bourne does not want a first year coach to lose?

JMU isn't made of money... if you're suggesting we just serve up the cash to anyone who will come here and play us.

RE: 2018 Football Home Games
The problem is the 1 for 1 with NSU. I'm fine with a 1 for zero, or a 3 for 1. I could live with a 2 for 1 with the return game in a 12 game season so as to maintain the 6 home games every season. But a 1 for 1 is complete crap. If they refused to do a 1 for zero or a 2 for 1, then move on to another cupcake who would.

That leaves 3 to discuss I guess.
-One's gonna be an FBS game. I think we did pretty good here.
-We knew it was going to be a payback game @ NSU. We have already beat that horse to death. I guess the pro NSU argument is that it's good to play VA schools? The VA schools us fans want to play aren't going to play us.
-Robert Morris? Is the NEC the only conference answering the phone when we ask people to come play us? I hope we're "dreaming bigger" but it doesn't seem like we can get bigger rivals to come to Harrisonburg.
I actually think the 1 FBS + 2 patsie FCS games may come from the way the playoff selection process and the NCAA SRS work. NDSU and other schools do this too.
NCAA SRS gives more credit for an FBS win, so a win will improve your score more and a loss hurts you less than an FCS loss. A winnable FBS game is ideal for the SRS ranking, plus you get paid.
NCAA SRS treats all wins/losses equivalently, except for the SOS component/score,which looks at your opponents W/L too. Margin of Victory also factors in. So ideally, you would select teams from weak conferences that are likely to win a lot in that conference. We should get SHSU or Central Ark on our schedule immediately.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think NDSU's new policy is to play FBS every other year to preserve having 6 home games. So something like:
Year 1:
FBS away
FCS home(return game)
FCS home(no return)
Year 2:
FCS home(no return)
FCS away(return game)
FCS home(no return)
EDIT: After looking at NDSU website, I don't think they're even scheduling FBS until Oregon at 2020 unless some buying out happens.
North Dakota State is hosting Delaware in the regular season in 2018.

Why not a home/away 1 for 1 or 3 for 3 with NDSU, YSU, SDSU, Jacksonville State...?
Look at the Virginia Tech future schedule and you'll see home and away series with Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan, WVU...
If the decision is to play FCS for eternity, schedule some FCS powers!!!

Listen to this podcast. It's Kevin White who handles our scheduling. He's pretty frank in it.
If you're still crying after that. I don't know what else to tell you. I guess you're just going to always be crying.
When you're a good program, teams are hesitant to play you because they know they're scheduling a loss.
Nice find, and an interesting interview. Kevin appears to be doing a very good job, and I'm glad he's handling it for us.

I don't think this is necessarily a good way to argue your point. VT's goals are different than ours obviously in many ways and I will not going to attempt to go into them all here, but hear me out on this. VT wants to position themselves for the FBS playoff (4 teams). They play on the weaker side of the ACC. VT needs to have solid wins on their schedule to make those playoffs. That's why their OOC schedule looks the way it does.
In any given year JMU's goal is to make the FCS playoffs (24 teams, 8 seeds). Our real goal is to make the top 8 seed line, I would hope. Well, JMU plays in one of the two most powerful conferences, by far, in all of FCS. We don't need to beef up our OOC to make the top 8 seeds. If we win the conference, we're almost guaranteed to get a seed. If we go undefeated, we'll be in at least the top 4 seeds. We use the cupcakes and the FBS game for growth. The FBS game helps finance the athletic department and the cupcake games help us prepare for the tough conference slate without too much danger of losing if we need to tweak things.

Thank you for sharing. I am definitely glad I listened. There are many times I had many of the questions that were asked and while I may not be happy about it, I understand the reasons now.
As a fan, it's easy to complain about these things. When you're the guy doing it, it's a completely different thing.

Yes, and no FBS team in 2018, along with Division 2 North Alabama.
This year they had EWU instead of an FBS, and two patsies.
They do what we do schedule wise, only when they struggle to get FBS schools to play, they play one “respectable” FCS school instead. When you beat too many FBS teams, it does make it harder to get them to pay for an FCS loss.
As much as I would like to see more interesting regular season games, I get why power FCS schools tend to schedule this way.

North Alabama is an FCS school next year, beginning their first year of transition up from D2. They're also a D2 force apparently, so it'll probably be a more challenging opponent than the two cupcakes they played this year.
