Great question. I'd be reassured if Fickell is continuously evaluating his staff and decides to make to make an upgrade or assignment change. I still feel it's mostly a player talent issue but one can make a case that there have been some coaching miscues along the way too.

I am not saying coaching has been great, but just to play devils advocate here... The team has gone through a multitude of coaching changes over the last 4 years, wouldn't there also be a benefit to having stability at the OC/DC positions for another season?

Freeman, and Denbrock have gotten a lot of flak this season (maybe rightfully so), but it might be good for the program to have kids learning the same system going into year two. It could just be a talent problem, It could just be a coaching problem, or it may be both, but I think some stability would not hurt our team.

How about make him HC and move Fickell to DC.

If I remember correctly, he was a candidate for UC's head coach job in 2009 after Kelly left but declined an interview.

Yep. He was/ maybe still is....a state of Texas guy. That same job he's about to get canned from was on the horizon. That, or maybe Texas. Passed on interviewing here b/c he was 'moving on up.' How that work out?

Great recruiter, not so great gameday coach - at least not at the highest level of the game. I wonder what he'll do next.

Agree continuity has been a problem. Hayden Moore, for example, has had three different OCs and QB coaches. I could be wrong, but I doubt anyone gets fired this year.

Nobody is getting fired. Not with what we have had to work with. Perhaps some take a lateral job that is not as much of a rebuild with an angsty fanbase.

Yeah, it somehow ended up all sideways for UF w/Chip. Walked away from their last meeting with him with a deal agreed upon - buuuuut - apparently the pen was put to the paper.

Seems like he's now headed to UCLA. A major, major coup for them.

He is a west coast guy. Florida would have been a wierd fit. UCLA will keep his recruiting contacts open especially in the pacific islands he mined so well.

Agreed. Not so much that he's a west coast guy - he's from NH - but that the fit woulda been weird. He's def not a deep in the heart of SEC guy. Being free to coach and not be THE main attraction in a city the size of Gainesville makes a lotta sense. He'll be the #1542, or lower, most famous guy in LA.

UF is extremely butt hurt about losing out to UCLA, but considering the circumstances, it's just a more natural fit. He'll do fine wherever he goes, might as well have a better fit.

The one thing they were saying on the radio is Chip is a really private guy. If you're the coach at Florida you're like a god. At UCLA you're not even in the top 10 sports figures in tow plus when you take into account celebrities in LA you're barely even a celebrity.

Agreed.

I'm sure UF will go after Frost, but I can't see Frost doing anything at this point until the Nebraska situation is clarified. So I think Frost waits (probably under the guise of "The season's not over...I'm coaching my team...") until Nebraska fires Riley and either approaches him or not.

I have also heard Taggart's name bantered about the UF scene. Taggart is still brand new up at Oregon. It just seems too early for him to make a jump back out.

Dan Mullen would be a natural candidate for Florida. But it is being reported that "something" about how Mullen left UF for Mississippi State has poisoned the well and Florida is reportedly not interested.

If he were younger and if he had more success at Marshall, I'd have thrown John "Doc" Holliday's name out there. But I can't see UF making a run at him nor at him being really interested. But perhaps his name at least ought to be on the radar.

A dark horse candidate here may very well be former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano. He did establish a solid program at Rutgers and he is a known commodity in Florida. I kind of doubt this one, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him interview.

The final piece of the puzzle is the question of what happens up at Tallahassee. The reports of Fisher exiting at FSU for Texas A&M are increasing. Florida and Florida State are rivals who will fish out of a similar pond for coaching candidates. If the FSU story is true, Florida could well jump more quickly (which could rule Frost out) to try and beat FSU to the punch.

RE: Coaching Carousel 2018...
After seemingly losing out on the Kelly Sweepstakes, UF, is hot to trot over, Frost. Supposedly the first outreach to his 'team' didn't go well. Hence the uptick in Kelly activity.

After that's fallen through, Frost, has the upper hand - he likely knows UF was offering CK anywhere from 8-9M/ per year (aka Saban money), and he knows there's mounting pressure from the UF fanbase....AND...he still has Nebraska in his back pocket. He's in an enviable position.

After him is, Taggart. He's from FL, we're all seeing USF reap the rewards of his turnaround skills. Oregon's record is deceiving b/c their starting QB was lost midseason. they haven't been the same since. Either way, he's once again showing his recruiting abilities as he has them chugging along at a clip even better than when CK was there.

Personally, I think both are top notch candidates, and likely to remain at the school longer than CK. No question about it that Taggart has more experience, and a more impressive track record - all things considered - however, Frosty is the hot name. If UF misses on him the butt hurt outta UF will be intense af.

After those two you got Mullen, who no one is excited about. He burned a lotta bridges on his way out, and reported his wife hates Gainesville. Memphis coach, and then....who knows?!?

I am surprised Venables, the DC at Clemson hasn't surfaced as a name yet for one of the SEC openings.

Nebraska has fired Mike Riley.

I'd suspect Riley ends up back in Corvallis.

But Frost will be the early favorite in Lincoln.

To Rath's point

https://twitter.com/BruceFeldmanCFB/stat...1214258176

Came down to Gainesville vs. LA. Idk about y'all, but I'm a city guy. This woulda been a no-brainer for me as well.

UF shoulda closed the deal well before UCLA fired Mora. There was literally no reason not to move hard & fast on CK after they fired Mac. The only delay that needed to be dealt with was whether or not he would be cleared by the conference due to previous issues at Oregon

Riley is Oregon State through-and-through, but it looks like they're going with Beau Baldwin, former Eastern Washington (FCS power) head coach and current Cal OC. I could definitely see Riley in Corvallis in a role with the athletic department.

Him going to NEB never made sense IMO. He had a comfy life in Oregon. He coulda rode that out forever. NEB hasn't been relevant in almost 2 decades. However, they still think they're hot stuff. A bad combination
