George Washington's church is removing his and Lee's statue.

Actually this is one where I don't have a problem with it. Its a church. While connected to the church, Washington and Lee are not religious figures. The purpose of the church is primary.

But it says something sad about the country that people feel unwelcomed by a statue of George Washington. Also says something sad about our educational system.

"I could see a case for taking down the Lee plaque, though I would still call it an act of stunning and despicable ingratitude for a former parishioner and a family who gave much to that congregation. But Washington? Seriously, George Washington?!"

It’s not statues being taken down. It’s two commemorative plaques. One says “In memory of George Washington” and the other says “In memory of Robert Edward Lee”.

But even that is too much for some people to bear.

It's not in memory of George Washington. It's in memory of his pallbearers.

The church can and will do as it sees fit.

I don't have an issue with a private church doing whatever they want.

I mean, there's all kinds of hypocrisy there, if they don't give whatever money Lee's family donated back to his descendants. I'm sure they're happy keeping monies donated from the Washington and Lee families while doing a little moral grandstanding.

I recall seeing a picture of a service that had about 8 parishioners in attendance. Wouldn't surprise me if this is a ploy to attract more parishioners.

perhaps they need to put in a bowling ally or start having contemporary services? Maybe relocate to the suburbs?

I guess I find it astonishing how weak and thin skinned some people must be to be triggered by folks dead so long ago.......and how weak the church leaders today must be to be playing the game of attempting to erase history.

It's part of that churches history.......that history won't change. Its done.

We shouldn't be trying to hold those in the past to today's standards - my god, doctors used to bleed patients in Washington's time - we don't accuse those doctors of murder.

I've actually been in that church and thought it pretty cool that both of those famous Americans were members and actually attended services there....you knew they stood in those same aisles and sat in those same pews.

I think they've made the decision that the church is not the place to has out political argument. Their mission is to lead people to Christ and not to determine whether people are either weak-kneed or bigots.
